FIVE FIRES DRIVE SCORES FROM BED INTO COLDEST NIGHT Policemen Rescue Mothers and Babes—Smoke Routs Out St. Regis Hotel Patrons. Five fires early to-day, one in the St. Regis Hotel, drove the scantily- clad occupants of these buildings into the worst cold of the winter In two of the blazes mothers and their ba- bies were saved from probable death by policemen. ‘The fire at the St. Regis, 55th Street and Fifth Avenue, was confined to the engine room, where it was discov- ered by Frank Kiilin, night time- keeper, but the smoke filled the ele- vator shafts and frightened occupants out of nearly every room, Only one guest refused to return to her cham- ber when assured the blaze was slight.
