The crowd which had assembled ontaide the prison grew as the day wore om, until it comprised, 20,000 persons, among whom | threatening demonstrations occurred. ‘The au- thorities thought it necessary to aug- Ment the defenses, and three tanks @nd several armored cars, with a large force of police and military, were stationed whout the structure. Tt was announced that the strike, which originally wus intended for a one day celebration, would continue until the prisoners were released. Commercial activities throughout southwest Ireland were stopped. No’ triins or street cars wete running. Stores and saloons were closed. Mall cafriers quit. work.
