Reduction Will Appear in To-Morrow’s Bills. Telephone subscribers in this city, | when they get their October bills to- | morrow, will realize probably more fully than ever before what the an- nounced reduction of 8 per cent. in the rates means. In addition to the reduction in the rate of service to subscribers there also will be put in force to-morrow the new interborough rate by which the charge for a telephone call be- tween any two of the five boroughs in this city will be 6 cents and no more, It is estimated that on this score alone telephone subseribers will bene- fit to the extent of between $500,000 and $1,000,000 a year, The 8 per cent. reduction in service rates will mean a saving of approxi- mately $2,400,000, so that telephone subscribers of the city will benefit to the extent of about $3,000,000 annu- ally. The revised schedule is set forth in the following tabulation: INDIVIDUAL LINE SUBSCRIBERS, | tobe 3 4R982999 It has been saison that fully 201,- 000 subscribers in Brooklyn and Queens Counties will benefit from the reductions and that more than 800,000 persons in the entire city will save money as @ result of the reduced rates. ‘The new rates are to remain in ef- fect for one year, at the expiration of which time the Public Service Com- mission wii reopen the case, While it is still too early to foretell the ex- act effect of the new rates, it is con- sidered likely that a year hence a further reduction will be ordered. The World began its campaign to bring about a reduction of telephone rates on July 21 of this year, retain- ing for the purpose former Pubiic Service Commissioner Milo R, Malt- bie, who directed a corps of experts. Mr, Maltbie was able to entablisn be- pany had made profits of $17,000,000 in four years, which led Corporation Counsel William P. Burr to state: “The figures published in The World from time to time indicate conclusive- ly that the company has been profi- teering at the expense of its New York subscribers. This situation hav- ing been revealed, the city ts here to demand that rates be reduced to a firure consistent with a condition which will furnish a reasonably fair Profit to the company and adequate service to the subscriber.” ‘This statement was made before the commission for the Second District, The final meeting at which the 8 per cent, reduction was agreed upon by both the public officials and the com- pany was held Sept. 4.
