Net Oh, WALL STREET News and Gossip of To-Day’s Market—Present and Fu- ture Prices. Although the money market, which has been the governing influence in stock market operations for some days past, showed further ease to- day, bull speculators apparently do not deem it a propitious time to make @ further aggressive campaign for a higher price level. Transactions again were well beyond the million share mark, but after an early show of firmness prices moved irregularly and the trend of values was uncer |tain throughout the session. An opening renewal rate of 6 per cent, for money was followed by’ a new wave of buying which was con- centrated principally in equipinest, oil and motor shares. Later, when told that there was every Ukelihood that the German delegates would sign the Peace Treaty on next Monday, food stocks and shares of other companies that are likely to be muaterially benefitted by increased export business, following the definite conclusion of peace, were taken in hand and marked up for substantial gains. However, the bull speculative ele- ment apparently is thoroughly ap- Dreciative of the fact that the danger of @ money stringency is not entirely passed. The prospect of heavy cash | withdrawals from banks within the next fifteen days, for the purpose of meeting July 1 interest and dividend payments, serve to temper bullish en- thusiasm with caution. Bteel shares were at one time in- fluenced by widely circulated reports that steel prices will be advanced on July ist. This comes on the heels of a Washington statement that the Federal Trade Commission, in an endeavor to prove that existing prices on steel rails are too high, will ask the various companies to furnish copies of their cost sheets. U. S. Steel and shares of other steel companies at one time showed ad- vances ranging from one to two points, but in the afternoon most.of these gains were lost. There continues to be considerable confusion of opinion regarding the outlook for the railroad companies. Wall Street is firmly convinced that the treaty will be signed next Monday despite contradictory news- paper cables from Germany, and there is heavy buying of stocks on this theory. Bankers have agreed that as s000 as the treaty is signed, it will be pos- sible to arrange large foreign credits in this country to be used solely for the purchase of American goods. This, in conju \ction with the entire removal of restrictions on exports, is practically certain to result in @ sharp upward leap in the country's trade. e ‘There is a long list of companies that have received heavy orders for for- eign shipment, but inability to satis- factorily arrange for payment hag held up work on these eontracts. However, it is now promised that this difficulty will shortly be overcome. Bulls are shaping their market com- mitments accordingly. Strength in equipment stocks should not be altogether credited to bull manipulation, for most of these com- panies are doing a record breaking volume of business, and in spite of the high cost of labor and materials are showing a large margin of profit. Tt is strongly indicated that when the 1918 annual report of the Ameri- can Car & Foundry Co. is published next week it will disclose a balance available for common dividends not far short of $36 per share, This, of course, is after deduction of taxes, in- cluding the Federal excess profit tax. Not only that, but it will be found that the company is in the strongest financial position in its history; and because of the big reserves built up out of earnings, it has become what seems an assured fact that the 8 per cent. dividend will be continued for the next four years at least, Yester- \day the stock showed a net gain of 6| | the high for the day wa: To-day, it was again strongly Sin- | THE Opened strong.
