BROADWAY BUSES URGED 10 END‘ AND SUBWAY JAM Responses to Appeal to 15,000 for Ideas to Improve Thor- oughfare Keep Clerks Busy. ‘The “reaction” following the Broad: 'y Way Association's appeal to 15,000 New Yorkers for ideas for the tm- DProvement of main street, America’s greatest was an outpouring of suggestions which amazed the origi- nators. Clerks of the association i) worked for two weeks sorting out and classifying the replies to the circular and the results were made known } ously, to-day. ‘The citizens took the request seri~ Very definite expressions ‘were gathered as to improvements for which the need was generally demanded. ‘The men and women who use Broadway, nearly all of them, want better light in the hours after the merchants and theatre owners and hotel keepers feel it no longer profit- able to pay for electric current. Transportation line construction may have made necessary the tear- ~ ing up of pavements and sidewalks for twenty years or more, but the Public is tired of having its principal thoroughfare as changing and dangerous underfoot as No Man's Land. Parks and plazas are not finished ‘when a mere open waste of fenced off space is provided. Fresh soil, fertil- izer, sod, shrubery and flowers prop- erly cared for would refresh the whole city. Side street omnibuses operating from subway and elevated station corners would keep down the un- comfortable crowding There were many suggestions too, which applied to other highways with fs much force as to Broadway. Of such was a meek proposal that the Janitor who puts out ash cans might condescend to turn the hose on them for a moment or so that the dust Would not float up and down for a block when the street cleaning man dumped them into his cart. Also there was a man with a notion that the proprietors of moving picture theatres had no right to put their ticket windows on the street so that their patrons occupy a rent free side- walk space. And—of course—there was the man _who wondered how long it would take to Make everybody realize that there was only one cure for all such difti- pcuities, the single tax.
