The din of horns, which grew gradually during the morning as merrymakers eased from their emplo 4 and througed Into the strects, grew to a deep, abiding roar this afte ernoon. Every soldier and form of any of the Allies was a part owner of the town, The fixhting men were smothered with kisses and ca- resses, especially along Broadway and ! Fifth Avenue, where girls formed in delegations of from twenty to fifty, swooped down on unsuspecting youths jor im the uni- | in uniform and embarrassed them ex- ceedingly. Not only in tu city but in the harbor was the celebration effect« Ively staged with the colors of the Allied Nations, for, with the coming of daylight, ships in the port were dressed, This was the first time such a display has been seen here since the beginning of the war. Fluttering flags, however, furnished about the only movement along the docks, tor the Jongshoremen were away ccle- bells, And crowds of Lrtukfastlesy revellers poured into the sireets At daylight parades were formed everywhere, “The Italian population .|of the Morris Avenue district held a “funeral of the kaiser and bur- lesqued the funeral mareh This proved to be only a beginning of a long series of such funeral services | brating. The news that Germany signed the armistice naturally caused cessation of the work of raising the selective draft army. All entrainments for army camps and all inductions except for the navy and the marines celled. Probably about bra as the day furnish were the thousands of men who expected to be started for the training camps and now face the prospect that they will not called to war. And as for their mothers and sweethearts and wives! Effigies of the Kaiser were burned all over the city. Hundreds of thousands of hastily improvised rigns were carried by enthusiastic revele Drivers of trucks—motor and hor: —turned their vehicles into pleasure | wagons and took friends and strang- | ers for rides. ‘The decorations on these trucks were characteristic. | Everything on wheels carried every-! body that could jam in. | In the shopping and light manu- | facturing districts uptown an effort was made to keep the wheeis of in- dustry humming but the effort died way at 10 o'clock. All. the em- | ployees were at the windows, The manufacturers closed up and went out to take a hand in the celebration themselves. Appropriately enough a bath of Nght thrown on the Statue of Liberty At 2.58 o'clock this morning was the first signal to New York that the armistice had een signed. Bugies sounded the fbws’ at the Battery, sirens took it up and the news went uptown jn a mave of noise, Aviators wep over the city during day. Manlatian’s demonstration to-day was full of “new lines” and “new business.” New kinds of improvised confetti filled the air with twisting serpents of paper. New noises were made, new cocktails mixed, new joy everywhere was given new expres- sion. The celebration began before % o'clock in Park Row, Times Square and other busy places with night workers and milkmen taking part. Soon they were joined by thou- sands of persons aroused by the din At 9 o'clock this morning Fifth Ave- nue was as densely thrdnged aa it was at 2 o'clock on last Thursday af, ternoon. Traffic was thorougbly de- moralized and nobody cared whether school kept or not. Everybody quit work to go out and swell the mob of merrymakers. About 600 pupils of the Stuyvesant High School at 15th Street and First Avenue refused to go in- doors, so their teachers joined them and hot-footed it to the big avenue, “Is this a holiday?” one of the teachers was asked No,” was the response, boys Just refused to go to school and we're with them,” All tho shops along the avenue were closed early in the morning. Nobody wanted to work, Nobody would work. So the bosses declared it a holiday anyhow. Nearly 3,000 employees of the Sub- marine Boat Company from Port Newark, N.
