‘ ¥ ' ‘ H “A greet net of mercy drawn through on ocean of unspeakable pain.” Contributed to the RED CROSS by JAS. McCUTCHEON & CO. Give till your heart says stop LASTOF DRAFT MEN Machinery for New Quota The G with the cheers of thousands to-d ind Central Station when the last army men from this district under the present call hed through to ma their Vd locum train 480 of them on the morning train and 103 more in the afternoon. To- morrow the draft machinery will be! set in motion for the next call, Most of the men who went away to- day were from Long Island City and nearby towns, and almost every man seemed to be escorted by all his fam~ fly and most of hie friends. It was one of the most enthusiastic send-offs wince the Draft Act was passed. The men ull wore flowers in their button- holes and carried fifty-seven varieties of hand luggage. Their pockets bulged, too, with last-minute offerings of cigarettes, cookies, bananas, choco- late drops—and they looked like a ple- nio crowd. The happiest group appeared to be that from Fichmond Hill, where the townsfolk had given the men an early morning farewell party with speeches and music and, most important of all, such a Dreakfast as would have made a German soldier feel that he was getting a month's rations at one sitting.
