SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1918 TARZAN OF THE APES By Edgar Rice Burroughs The Man-Monkey of the Jungle| Does Battle for His Love Against All Odds Coprrightet by The Story.Pres Corporation, All rights reserved. oy you know Tarzan—Tarzan of the Apes? No more fascl- nating fiction-figure has ever been created than this white boy of noble birth who grows to manhood a wild thing among the wild things of the jungle. And it is therefore with tho deepest pleasure that The Evening World announces that it will publish twelve new stories of his adventures on twelve suc- sessive Saturdays, beginning to-day. Each will be a complete story. Tarzan's fathor and mother were Lord and Lady Greystoke, who were marconed by a mutinous ship's crew on the African oast. Soon afterward Lady Greystoke’s baby was born; and for a year thereafter thia little English family lived alone in their iso fated jungle fastness, unable to escape and unable to find or sum- mon succor, The story of their life was recorded by Greystoke =| up to the time his wife died. And the next day, when his vigilance | relaxed in his grief, a troop of giant anthropoid apes attacked and | killed him. A femate of these jungle folk had that day seen her own offspring dashed to death from a tree-top; and mother ine | stinct led her to snatch up the year-old child and carry it off with = | her. Soon “hunger closed the gap between them, and the son of an English lord and an English lady nursed at the breast of Kala, the great ape.” A part of the history of Tarzan has been chronicled, but many of his most striking adventures are yet to be told. A peculiar glamor gilds these captivating new storics—something of the bloom and radiance of the world’s dawn glorifies Tarzan’s life in the jun- gle; and you will find these wonder-tales uniquely refreshing.
