nuit | Government Pays $200 to} | $275 a Ton for Craft Now “, Worth Up to $375. Bleven large steam yachts capable of extended war service In Buropean waters, for which it is well under. stood they are intended, have been purchased by the Government through the International Mercantile Marine Company of N way, which ts acting agent for the Navy Department's &pectal Board for Patrol Vesrots. these vessels has been made “on the nail" by the Gowernment, so that Payment for | J S they have passed permanently from } their owners, As to the prices the Government had to pay, the @latement of the Mercantile Marine officials that the Navy Department “has only paid what the yachts are worth.” was supple- mented to-day by that of one of the leading yacht brokerage houses in the city which has been engaged in seeking out avallavke craft for naval service. “The Government is not paying ex cessive prices for any of these yachts,” it was said. “ but, of course, the Prices of such craft have risen grout- Jy tn the last three years. At that time the price of a steam yacht was from $8° to $110 per ton. Now they are from $510 to $376 per ton. The price the Government is paying 1s Detween $200 and, say, $275 per ton. “The method of arriving at the value of the vessels is calculated to work somewhat of & hardship on the owners. It is determined by sub tracting from the actual cost of the craft, 16 per cent. for the firet year's depreciation and 3 per cent. for that of cach succeeding year. This seems rather unfair as, normally, the first year's depreciation is rarely above 1 per cent. “In « fow cases owners Nave boosted the prices of their craft, in others they have offered the boats free of all charges and in still others they were willing to accept whatever the Gov- ernment offered. ‘Henry Loughlin of Pittsburgh offered his yacht Corona for $100,000. The Government gave him $90,000, which he was entirely will- ing to accept. “There have been cases in which it Wes necessary to reject yachts owing to the excessive work required to fit thent for naval service. Two brand new vessels were recently offered at | $275 @ ton, but were declined for this reason, All deck houses, for instance must be removed, and in some in stances these have been lifted off bed ily and stored until the end ef the war.” The eleven yachts which passed into Governmer have ands are Leonard = Richards’ Horace Dodge Kob- ert Graves’ "E A.C, Tay- lor'a “Wanderer”, “Corona”, William H.
