an RE OR « 4 BOXING NOW WON'T PRODUCE ANY GREAT HEAVYWEIGHTS Jess Willard Likely to Be Last Unusual Champion, as Men De- veloped Under the Present System of Ten-Round No-Deci- | sion Bouts Don’t Compare With the Old-Time Giants Who Battled Twenty or Thirty Rounds and Often to Decisions. Copyright, 1917, by The Press Publishing Co, ‘T'S doubtful thet the world will (The New York Evening World). ever seo another great heavyweight ebampion. In America, where they have all been developed since the Queensberry rules came in, finish fights and fights of twenty or twenty- REA pw! five rounds have almost disappeared. Their place has been taken by the ten-round, no-decision bout, which is not a developer of champions. The fighters brought up on this mild plan cannot compare with the old- timers who fought long bouts to a decision. In the long bouts the old- time championa learned the fine points of real fighting. Self-defense is becoming one of the lost arts. Just at present Jess Willard out- classes all alleged rivals for his championship title. Willard earned his honors in @ forty-five-round fight that went twenty-six rounds, I was trained to fight all day. His generalship, studied out in a long year of preparation, was the generalehip of @ fighter who goes in to offset skill, strength and hitting power in a way that will—after hours of fighting—br Standing 6 feet 7 inches weighing 250 pounds when in perfect condition, with tremendous reach, unusual skill, hitting power, and @ trick of fighting furiously when hurt, Jens might easily be the best heavy- weight champion ever known to the ring: But he lan't, Gifted with won. derful fighting ability, he falls down in one essential thing; he doesn’t like to fight, It is almost impossible to Induce him to fight any one, even an opponent he should beat easily, Other champions have fought often to de- fend their tities, Willard won't fight. He ia a “champion” in name only. He 1s legitimate champion, of course, for he whipped and knocked out Cham- pion Jack Johnson, But as title holder himself Jess seems to have no ambi- tion beyond thering in the profits bed @o with the crown. He likes the cireus. Still, if Jess would fight, there would be no one to meet him with any great promise of euccess. The only one in sight now who might possibly outfight Willard (if Jess has gone back about 60 per cent. through lack of ring practice) ts Carl Morris, Carl ts big Ie to fight Willard, and can match ard in strength, He doesn’t compare with Willard as a boxer—for a moment. ‘Willard is light footed and swift, for all his tonnage. Morris is clumsy, powerful, heavy. But Morris has de- veloped a trick of plunging straight at his man and hitting incessantly, mainly for the body. This whipped Fulton, who was vastly superior to Carl as a boxer and @ punishing hit- ter, If Willard lacks his old stamina’ it MIGHT whip him, That's about uhe only chance. None of the challengers of Wiljard an boast a clean record. However they are compared their performances they are compared, their performances come around in a circle without pointing directly to Willard, See how they put each other out of the running. For instance, start with Moran, Moran knocked out Coffey. Coffey outboxed Morris, Morris whipped ing victory his way. oly ecm t re cpa mrs co xara Weinert outboxed Levinaky, Levinsky beat Dillion, AND Dillion whipped Moran, Or take it another way, to let in one or two more heavyweights. Gun- boat Smith beat Moran 20 rounds in California, and in 10 rounds tn New York, Jim Coffey knocked out Smith. Coffey was knocked out by Moran. Whee! This te becoming complicated, Try again, Jim Savage stopped Moran in seven rounds, Moran never would fight him again, Welnert, Dillon and two or three others have licked Sav- age. Where does Moran fit tn with Willard? Or like this: Jim Flynn beat Mor- ris, Gunboat Smith, Jim Coffey, Al Norton and innumerable others have beaten Flynn, Where does Morris fit in? And where does Fulton fit in, who was outclassed by Morris? In all the lot there doesn’t stand out @ single man who has been in- vinctble throughout his career, Every one has some sort of a blot on his es- cutcheon. And so--but whisper it— has our Champion Jess. There is on record one occasion when a tenth- rater’ was credited with stopping friend Jess in a couple of rounds. Jess explains that by saying n6 wasn't much of a fighter anyhow in thone days, and when he was told he'd be arrested if he won he “iaid down’ to get away from that inhospitable town. Also there was an occasion on which “Bearcat McMahon” ts sup- which “Bearcat” McMahon ts sup- posed to have handed Jess a little trimming. This was shortly before Joss was matched with Johnson Was Jens too good-natured with the Bearcat? Probably something like that, It's certain that a ring full of McMahons wouldn't have had a chance with Jess in Havana Summing it ail up, Jess stands alone--but he might not stand alo: if ho let big, beefy, clumsy Carl Mor- ris have a chance, And once again, incidentally, as tt all to himself even if he did mingie were, ho might still have the throne| { BEST oy Abe ~ vow on J.
