Spontaneous combustion started a fire in the easterly end of the City Hall cellar night about 8 o'clock. Had it not been discovered by Thomas McNamara, the watchman, making his rounds, and had it extended twelve feet from where it started to a point where a lot of paint and oil is stored, the blaze might have blowa up or destroyed the office of President McAneny, directly overhead. The fire started in a quantity of olly rags painters who are finishing work in the Mayor's office had thrown beneath an old stairway in an unused cellar room. McNamara wan driven out of the room by the ke when he opened the door, and ran to the pol ce station across the corridor. A alarm Was sent ty and @ vingle fireman from Engine Company No. 32 on Beekman Street hurried over and put out the fire by gathering up the smouldering and depositing them in an ash bai —_——_—_— SALUTE FLAG AT ALL TIMES.
