There is a reign of terror at tye, 1 prison. Last night, while the pris-| oners were in the mess hall, a gen- eral attack was mado on tho keep-, ers, To-day'’s outbreak was in re- taliation for punishment meted out to those punished for last night's disturbance. ‘The bread and water diet and soll-| tary confinement followed a visit of i Correction Commissioner Katherine B. | Davis and Mr. Lewis, her deputy, to) the island this afternoon. The con-| | Wmed prisoners howled every time the d woman head of the prison came in aight. ‘The trouble began on July 4, when Warden Patrick Hayes punished pris- onerg for singing. Another causo for dissatisfaction was the seizure of sixty- five letters written by convicts to their relatives and friends. Davis says she has the letters. M. show, she says, that the prisoners were drug fiends. After the convicts had set fire to the tailor shop to-day they turned their attention to the machinery con- necting the power house with the workshops. Inside of five minutes every wheel in the shops had censed turning. Seeing the blaze well started, the eixty mutineers turned on the guards. In a hand-to-hand encounter @ dozen of the convicts were eo badly beaten that they were carried away to the hospital when the engagement ended. While the keepers were battling with the convicts the flames in the starting in @ corner ¢ material soaked in grease bad been presur bly smug- gied, began to gain great headway. What is considered by friends of the family to be a sign of weakness in the case for the prosecution was the announcement this afternoon by District-Attorney Smith of Nassau County that he will ask for an adjourn ment of the formal examination of Mrs. Florence Carman, under arrest for the murder of Mrs. Louise Bailey, which is scheduled for next Monday in the Freeport Town Hall before Justice of the Peace Norton. Mrs. Carman is ill in the county jail at Mineola and is not averse to a postponement of the approaching ordeal. The District-Attorney says he does not wish to have the case go to the examination stage with the evidence he has at hand and intimated that he is on the trail of additional evidence.
