- a & | EXASENBLYMAN OT 2) ON BAL ON CHARGE OF BAK LOUTIG betta ertavetien tere, Richard Murphy Surrendered pete epee for Alleged Conspiracy to Rob Institution. Former Assemblyman Richard Murphy of Amsterdam, N. Y., was taken before United States Com- missioner Houghton by Federal Agents Scully and Pigniuolo to-day to give bail for trial in the up-state district court. Murphy is the fifth man charged with conspiracy to rob the First National Bank of Amater- dam of $175,000 between January 1, | 1910, and the present time. Eugene Oppenheim and Howard J. Rogers of ‘the firm Oppenheim & Co. were ar- ; rested in their luxurious offices at |No. 111 Broadway Friday last and were held in $25,000 bail each. Murphy surrendered himself to Chief of Police Patrick Hayes of Ho- boken Saturday night. He said he thought there was a federal warrant | out for him. Hayes verified the im- pression by telephoning to Amster- dam and Murphy was locked up. Re- corder McGovern turned him over to the Department Justice agents yes- terday and he came to this city vol- untarily and was put in the Tombs, The indictment charges that Wi!- Nam T. Brice, a bookkeeper, and a paying teller entered false credits to the account of the Riley Brice Realty Company of which Murphy was vice- president, and that Murphy drew | money as fast as the credits were entered. The cheeks and drafts were cashed through Oppenheim & Co. The leak in the bank was not dptected because the false entries and the checks against the account were always for small amounts and the account was never allowed to get big enough to attract attention. ‘The bank is capitalized at $125,000, has a eurplus of $199,000, and aggre- gate deposits of $48 Pope Receives Am Pilgrims.
