SULZER MAKES CHARGE OF CHIEF JUDGESHIP DEAL Whitman Orders a John Doe Inquiry Into the Hennessy Story After Examining “Little Black Book.” Charles F. Murphy fssued a statement in which he said he was for the nomination of Mayor Gaynor but was overruled by the district leaders. He predicted McCall's election. District-Attorney Whitman ordered a John Doe inquiry under the direction of Chief Magistrate McAdoo into the charges of John A. Hennessy. William Sulzer made two statements attacking McCall and Murphy. He said MeCall tried to get him to call off the Hennessy investigaions, and had McCall succeeded he (McCall) had been promised the nomination for the Chief Judgeship of the Court of Appeals. Mr, Sulzer accused Murphy of seeking to profit by the Boston Post Road Trolley bill by getting a fran- chise and selling it to the owners of fine estates along the high- way. Judge MeCall made a categorical denial of every charge uttered by Sulzer. The candidate referred to Sulzer as a “poor, misguided man” with a disordered brain, Tammany Hall made redoubled etforts to get union labor indorsements for the ticket. Every district leader has been ine structed to line up the labor organizations for McCall and to spread the news that McCall is a “union man.” William H. Moore tiled a suit in the United States Dis- trict, Court designed to cause the Supreme Court of the United States to review the impeachment and removal of Gov, Sulzer.
