Joe Wood, the star Boston American twirler, is hot on the trail of the recora made early in the season by Rube Marquard of the Giants. The Med Sox pitcher has won sixteen games already, thereby equalling the American League record recently made by ‘Walter Johnson, the crack specdster of the Senators. This is cer tainly the best year for pitchers in the history of the game, as more Fecords have been made than in any similar period. But here is the most noticeable thing abont the record-making—after finishing their @tring of victories the pitchers in every case have cracked. Mar quaré hasu’t been the same since his string was broXen, neither has Dubuo of the Tigers, Johnson of the Senators nor some of the box- men who have made shorter records. Local fans are hoping Wood wil) crack before the American League season ends, which would enhance the Giants’ ch: of winning the world’s championship. ‘Wood's next three gameS will be with second division clubs—Cleve- land Detroit and New York. Wood will try for his seventeenth straight victory in the double bill against the Naps to-day. OF COURSE SPECULATORS MAY Ger INTO THE LIME. Baldwin and K. O. Brown FIRST GAME. The last named was forced to quit early in the race, Following fast after the lifting of the Harmsworth Cup after it had been iooked upon as the permanent property of the United States, the lows of the Poughkeepale race was a matter of keen disappointment to the American motor- boat enthusiasts, but in spite of this Sampson was heartily congratulated upor his victory when he boarded the committee boat Paula after the finish.
