NO DOCK STRNE SA SHPPNG ME READY TO CONFER Official, Declares Longshore- men ‘Too Weakly Organized for Sympathetic Walkout. The posstdility of a sympathethic strike by the 100,000 longshoremen In this city being called to support the threatened strike by the Atlantic Coast Beaman's Union, the Marine Firemen's Union, the Coal Passers’ Union and the Stewards’ Union was denied to-day by H. H. Raymond, President of the American Steamship Association and Vice-President ami General Manager of the Consolidated Steamship Company. A conference will be held late this afternoon between the representatives of the steamship companies and George 98! "Bolling, secretary of Seamen's Unton, and James Vidal, retary.af, the Marine Firemen’s Union. An effort will be made by the unton men to effect an agreement with the steamship compantes, who have, made known already their determination not to renew any of the agreements with the unlons, all of which expire the end of this month. “The threat of a general strike of the Jongshoremen {# impracticable,” said Mr. Raymond to-day, “for the reason that the longshoremen are too weakly organized to make such an arbitrary move. The steamship men have no pro- test against union labor, but they do object to having the unions dictate the managements of the ships, for that 1s practically what their demands mean. It ‘Would mean a mutinous condition on the sea, and where would the captains be how could they control such @ situa- ton? “Steamship men realize what a sertous matter a general strike among the long- @horemen would be, but such a thing Is @bsurd. Hiiminating the matter of the Possibility of that, has any representa- tive of any of the many local untons of ‘the lohgshoremen made any regular pro- test to the steamship men? WENY QUARTERS UNSANITARY OR FOOD POOR. “Tn the demands made on us by the ‘Atlantic Coast Seamen's Union we deny their allegations as to the unsanitary @ondition of the quarters and the poor food on our ships. We will not grant @n increase of pay. At the conferonce this afternoon, to be held in the Old Dominion ine offices, we will make every effort to reach a settlement with the men. In my reply to thelr letter to me I did not refuse to employ the union men or to give them falr treat- ment. All their complaints will be Ustened to with deep consideration for the men. What more can we do than that? We shall stand firm on our refusal to renew any of the agreements as they stand at the present time." ‘George C, Bodine, when aeen in his offices at No. 1 South street, sald that while his union and the affiliated organ- izations had, requested the aid of the rt had been dissatisfied for a long time with tho conditions under which they work. “They have recetved a great deal of encouragement from the recent strike in England,” said Bodine, “The men there were not as Ml organized as here and were successful. A general in- crease of pay for all scales of labor 4s what the longshoremen want, I be- eve if the steamship compantes refuse to recognie ovr union, which ts practl- Yoally the meaning of thelr refusal to re- new their agreements, that all the long- @boremen in the city will walk out. They began posting circulars on the docks yes- terday telling their members that should we strike it was the proper time for them to take action. “The letter sent to us by Mr. Ray+ mond was a very non-committal epis- tle which in my opinion effort to sidestep the issue a break our agreements befor of June, I replied and asked for a conference,” eee a Mikado Kecelves Dr. E!
