SAID TAFT WAS WILLING. Asked to Go to White House for Conference. WASHINGTON, June 3.— Bawani Hines of Chicago, the storm centre thus far of the second Lorimer inquiry, to-day told the Senate Lorimer Committee his story of how he became actively interested In the election of Mr. Lorimer to the United States Sen- ate. He deciared that both Senators Aldrich and Penrose approached him tm May, 1909, on the subject of the Lil ator Aldrich represen: President Taft was especial! in having the Tiitnots var Genator Aldrich, fr. Hines said, also wtated that both he and the Prosident felt that Mr. Lorimer, then a Repro- sentative in Congress, could be elected Mr. Mines asserted that Senator Al- @rich had wasted him to go to the White House to see the President. ‘Mines said he thought it best for Mr. Aldrich and Mr. Taft to talk the mat- ter over by themselves and did not go. Senator Aldrich came to him, he said, | immediately following the conference @n4 reported the President as favor- Lorimer. Mr. Hines said he at once got In com- munication with Senator Lorimer at Springfield over the telephone and went west the next day to carry out what he believed to be a mission from the adm: istration. Senator Aldrich told him thi if any one doubted the administratio! attitude to have them call up either Al- drich or President Taft himself. PENROSE GIVES HIS VERSION ON SENATORSHIP. Following the forenoon session of the committee, at which Mr. Hines testified, Senator Penrose made this statement In regard to his activity in the Lorimer matter: “1 did talk with him about the situa- thom in the Illinois Legislature, pending the Senatorial election in 190, I had served wtih Senator Hopkins and felt interested in him, and I told Mr. } that I hoped there would be an I thought the Republican ranks be filled up and said so, but b suoh exprossion 1 did not ge.
