S. Senate. "ROOSEVELT NOW THOUGHT TO BE PLANNING THIRD TERM Conditions Have Changed Since He Made Pledge on Night of Election That He Would Not Run Again —Some Recent Straw Votes. |? WASHILNGTON, April 4—Close on the heels of the hot contro- versy between President Roosevelt and E. H. Harriman comes the Teport , to-day that information was carried diféctly to the White House -fecently bout the conspiracy of millionaires against the President and his policies. ; According to this report, the so-called conspiracy accounts for the Admin- istration’s sudden activity against some of the big corporate interests. It is said that the plot was accidentally disclosed at a private dinner ae ! recently at which a certain United States Senator drank a great deal esas wine than was good for him, and while he was at the height of bhis irrigated enthusiasm he let the cat out of the bag. Before his friends | could gel a stop order on his tongue he had blurted out the astonishing statement that the Rockefellers, Harriman, Hearst and others had raised | 5 a fund of $5,000,000 for the purposs of defeating any man chosen by| ; Roosevelt to succeed him in the Presidency. According to the inebriated Senator the plot was already thickening in Ohio and he pointed to the Taft-Foraker fight there as evidence of the truth of what he said. He asserted also that it was at work in Penn- \ sylvania and several other States and thai the plotters fully expected { to be in control of the next Republican National Convention, | ALL THE FACTS REPORTED TO ROOSEVELT. a» 1 j deed, Secretary Loeb is said to have been one of the members of the Ginner party. It is said that Harriman at that time made the | declaration at a little meeting of this kind that he could deliver the dele- | gates of six States for Hanna, Whether this be true or not, it is certain | that Roosevelt believes it. Roosevelt is doubtless no less inclined now to accept as gospel the revelations of the alleged plot of the millionaires as revealed by the drunken Senator. Harriman Returns to the Attack With New Denial Harriman to-day reflects upon President Roosevelt's. version of the White House conference in the national campaign of 1904, and boldly repudiates the authoritative announcement from the White House yesterday that Harriman contributed because he had political ambition; wanted to sidetrack Depew so that he might be elected to the Senate. Mr, Harriman to-day issued the following statement reiative to the recent exchange of correspondence be tween himself and President Roose- welt: “1 do not intend to continue this controversy. You, gentlemen (meaning the reporters), must try to help me and not ask me to answer questions the answers of which, are self-evident, “Everybody knows that the contest for the Senatorship in 1904 was between Messrs, Black and Depew, and there could not possibly have | been any other candidate, There was no bargain whereby money was | to be raised in consideration of having Depew appointed as Ambassador to Fmnce or made United States Senator, and my. letter to Mr, Webster | does not se sii That part of the agreement was for the purpose of harmonizing (ne Black and Depew forces if it became necessary.’* “Ar, Harriman liad his stenographer reac the statement aloud, being All of these facts were carried directly to President Roosevelt.
