MOTORMAN FLUNG -OVER DASHBOARD Second Avenue Car Crashes, Almost at Full Speed, Into Fourteenth Street Trolley, “Lifting Car in Air. Car No, 126, of the Fourteenth street line, in charge of Motorman John Cooney, of No, 631 East Thirteenth street, was pi ng west. It was fammed, to th 8 with passengers taken on at th Fourteenth street ferry. Cooney was gulding it slowly across the Second avenue crossing, when Second avenue car No. 1097, tn charge of Motorman Thomas Thompson, of No. 164 Third- avenue, came down the tracks with a rush Almost, at full speed the Second ave- nue car’ crashed into the crosstown vehicle, striking it in the centre with an impact that could be heard for block. The car wes practically lifted in the air by the force of the collision, thrown completely off the tracks and aij put turned over on its side. Motorman Hurled Over Dashboard. Motorman Cooney was thrown head- foremost dver the dashboard of his car, Janding Ory his head and back on the pavement.’ John Leonard, of No. 185 Stagg street, Brooklyn,.a passenger, turned a similar somersault from the fear platform. When he was picked uv he aid all his teeth had been jarred out. ' The densely packed passengers in the crosstown car were shuffled about like Jackstraws, wound into an inextricable tarigle of limbs. Every window in the car had been smashed and the shower of broken glass added to the fright and discomtiture of the passengers. Luckily the train was far enough ahead to clear the main track, which permitted the trains that followed to take the south switch. A force of workmen with jacks were hurried to the scene of the acciden: half an hour after It occurred and they had considerable difficulty in loosening an,end of the broken axle which was jammed in the floor of the station.
