RACING # SPORTS PRICE ONE oe JAP SHIPS. CRIPPLED, TOO, AT PORT ARTHUR Makaroff Had Gone Out to Fight Togo at Sea and Russians Say He Intlicted Much Damage Before His Flagship Was Sunk and He Lost His Life, } PORT ARTHUR, April 15.—The destruction of the P2tropavlovsk was preceded by a battle between the Russian torpedo boat division and a number of Japanese torpedo boats that lasted most of Tuesday night. Officers who participated in the engagement say that the Japanese fleet | sufferell severe damage, but definite informatior. on that point has rot , been gained. ’ Soon after daylight on Wednesday morning it was scen that the tor- pedo-boat destroyer Bezstrashni was in a bad way. She was crippled and had been cut off from the rest of the Russian torpedo-boat flotilla, ; bs and although her men were fighting bravely the Japanese were in such |i force that she could not shake them off. The cruiser Bayan steamed out to the aid of the Bezstrashni, and when she was sighted by the Japanese they retired. An attempt was made to get th damaged torpedo-boat into the harbor under the protection of the Bayan, but she sank at 7 A. M. LURED OUT BY THE JAPS. The torpedo boats of the Japanese that had been driven off by the Ba: were soon out of sight, and it was supposed that’ the attack had ance. . So far as could be observed they were alone save for the torpedo boats, and Admiral Makaroff ordered the entire squadron out to meet |! them. As the Russian fleet.steamed out to sea the Japanese vessels with- drew. Admiral Makaroff kept on his course, and the next observed was the presence of sixteen or seventeen Japanese ships of war, including bat- tle-ships and cruisers, with numerous torpedo boats and destroyers. ‘The Japanese. advanced in force, a formidable array of fighting ves- sels, and Admiral Makaroff fell back to the roadstead, where he signalled the ships of his squadron to form in line of battle. This manoeuvre was fm process of accomplishment when, precisely at 10 A. M., there was a terrific explosion under the Petropavlovsk and she sank in a few minutes. THE DAMAGE TO THE POB.EDA. At about the same time the Pobieda was injured amidships and steamed to the inner harbor, leaving the rest of the fleet in battle array. not serious. Grand Duke Cyril, Capt. Jakovleff, Lieut. Yakoysky and Midship- ‘weeck of the Petropavlovsk. There are conflicting reports as to the num- ber of seamen rescued, one source of information making it thirty-two and another fifty-one. ‘ All of those saved ftom the Petropavlovsk were picked up by the tor- ‘pedo gunboat Gaydamak, which had gone out from the harbor with Ad-|f miral: Makaroff’s fleet. A No official statement has been made here as to the cause of the de-|¥ struction of the Petropavlovsk. It is said by the officers in authority that’ the source of the/explosion that. sunk the ‘Vessel has not ‘been ascertained.
