THE WORLD: TUESDAY EVENING, MARCH 22, 1904. TICKET SCALPER |MERGER STOCKS ‘FIGHT OVER PRICES SPRING RISE IN PRICE OF BEC Beef Trust. with Refrigerating Plants Filled to Overflowing: Decides Opon the Annual Squeeze of the Public. WILL PUT INCREASE INTO EFFECT TO-DAY Trust Also Looking Out for th Poultry and Egg Market, with the Intention to Create an Artificial Price There Too. The raising of prices by the Best Trust, which has been expected since the middle of the winter, has come at fast and although its refrigerators in this section are glutted with beef and mutton and its sources of supply in the West finaffected it has put up fresh meat from. a quarter to half @ cent, so that wholesale quotations to-day are ruling at seven and a half and eight cents the pound. That means that if the butchers have to pay more for their meat they will have to charge their customers more. A manager of one of the big Jersoy City refrigerators is authority for the statement that there are 5,000,000 pounds of meat in storage in Chicago and millions more in Kansas City, Omaha, St. Joseph (Mo.), Huteninson (Kan.) and the other big centres which supply this’ market. This great overstock {s result of a reduction In consump- don, due largely ft is sald to the breakfast-food Eggs have t great food com- modity of late, ne Beef ‘Trust jx going to booin, in preference to meat, and, with its enormous refrigerating faciilties, {t can deal not only in that product, but in butter and poultry as well.
