‘Fava EVENING WORLD end p | BASEBALL, | UGILISM. | THE WORLD: TUESDAY EVENING, MARCH 20, SPORTS EDITED BY HIMSELF, COOM UP, FAVORITE FOR HANDICK? i} “Father Bill’ Daly’s Horse Favored to, Take Opening Feature at Bennings) _ Next ‘Thursday for the Third Time) in Succession. WASHINGTON, D. C., March 22.—The outlook at Bennings !s most al. youraging. The weather has been so unfavorable and the track so bad t when the, bugle calls the horses to the post for the races on ‘Thursday, t opening day, not one half of the horses will be fit to race. i The horse that can work six furlongs in 1.20 at Bennings is doing a) wonderful trial. This fact accurately tells the story of the condition of the | horses and the state of the rack. It is with much reluctance therefore We trainers and owners are turning toward Father Bill Daly's horse Himeeit | ‘as the probable winner of the Bennings Handicap on the opening day. Him- self won this handicap ast year and he won it the year before. His chances of winning this year are equally as good as if not hetter than those of any other horse in the race. Himself and Tomcod, who 1s aleo an eligible for the handicap, arrived with the balance of the string yesterday. DALY HORSES READY. Both horses look to be botter conditioned than any of the candidates except those that have performed at New Orleans and Hot Springs. While other trainers in New York were waiting for the tracks at Gravesend or Bheepshead to get in proper shape Daly has been sending Tomcod and Hin- velf up and down the Boulevard in all sorts of weather. oa He has taken chances with those two such as no other trainer would | think of taking, and has pulled them through fit and sound. . ; Goorge Odom Ix billed to ride Himself, while E. Ascension will be ridden by Tommy Burns, and is ft and ready, Tripos Hill 1s not fond of such a track ax is to be found at Bennings, though he won over it last fall, Tho going Is much deeper now than {t was then, and as the frost has had no chance to come out of the ground there {s little posabbllity of a good track by the opening day ‘Conkling has not done well at New Orleans, but he loves this track improve over it. Athlana, Mrs. Frank Foster, Morning Star, Wreath of Ivy and Cedar Rapids can scarcely be classed as handicap material judging by their per- formances at New Orleans. Not only are the handicap candidates backward, but the entire two-year-old division 1s on the big side, trainers fearing to send their youngsters along unier such adverse conditians as have prevailed. For this reason one must look to the two-year-olds from New Oriean’ who are well conditioned and ready as belns the most likely winners in the early races for this class of horses. ‘The Gough- neres youngsters are perhaps the most forward of the locals and may be counted on. as factors.
