\ Ne “ The Roosevelt and the New York in Need of Funds in Ad- dition to the Eye and Ear In- firmary. ‘WILL INCREASE WORK OF THE BELLEVUE aE May Call Upon the City fo Aid Unless Their Funds Are Soon Increased by Philanthropic’ Persons. Many causes are assigned by hospital uperintendents for the present stratt- ‘ aned condition in which a number of the hospitals of New York now find themeelves. Lack of funds {s tho prin- cipal reason that Roosevelt Hospital. the New York Hospital and the Bye and Ear Infirmary have been compelled to lose certain wards. The increased | sickness of this winter ts given as a further reason for testing the capacity of the hospitals. Dr, William Mabon, Superintendent of Bellevue Allied Hospitals, talked at , length on the situation to-day, “Tt Is true,” he sald, “that the city hospitals are taxed to thelr full capacity by the unusual conditions that now pre- vail in many of ‘the hospitals of New York. Of course we always have a large number of patients, because Belle- vueand its allled hpspitals are alto- gether supported by the city, and per- sons unable to pay for treatment come to us, But now that Roosevelt and the New York Hospitals have closed down wome of their wards we shall be called upon to take in an even larger number. Rellevue Record Broken. “Only last Sunday night there were an even 1,000 in Bellevue. This breaks all records so-far‘as the number of patients go, being about 200 more than ‘we have accomodations for. Many of the wards were overcrowded, the pa- tients having to lle on springs and beds on the floor. And as each ward Is ar- ranged that each patient ehall receive + & certain number of cubic feet of air the increase makes this impossible. “However, we shall take as good care of the patients as we can, and there {9 no danger of the poor suffering’ to any great extent.
