RECEIVER FOR J. OVERTON PAINE ‘The Young Man Who Played . Meteor in the Wall Street As- tronomical System, Comes to the Usual End. GONE, CREDITORS CLAMOR. BMifles M. O'Brien, jr., was appointed fectiver in supplementary proceedings for John Overton Paine by Supreme Cobrt Justice O'Gorman to-day on the epplication of H. W. Hardon, of No. 6 ‘Well street, in behalf of Joseph B. C. ‘Tuell, a creditor of the vanished broker in the sum of $2,296, Mr. Tuell, who is a New Bedford, Mass., man, began proceedings against J. Overton Paine & Co,, claiming that he had been defrauded out of $2,296, and Obtained judgment for the full amount on Feb. 18. He has been unable to col- lect the amount of the judgment and be- gan these supplementary proceedings to- day. He is also seeking to attach Paine's seat in the Produce Exchange. Paine has deserted his former luxurl- ous quarters at the Waldorf-Astoria. ‘His brokerage offices across from the hotel are closed. His lawyers say they have no knowledge of his whereabouts. Paine is entirely obliterated as a fig- ure in the local financial world which he once aspired to dominate. Of many remarkable carcers in Wall street his ts the most meteoric. Ten years ago Paine, a native of Geor- gla, came to New York from Florida .With $100 in his pocket and one suit of es on his back. Within elx months © was a millionaire. : “Iam going to make the greatest for- tune ever amassed In Wall street," he leclared. People helleved him, and not intirely without reason, as his financlal coups wére Napoleonle. They have a way of taking the conceit out of young men in Wail street, however, ana when young Mr. Paine waxed troublesome he soon found he was only a pigmy in the hands of the giants. They took him up by the heels and drew him across their knees and spanked ‘him. Incidentally they shook ell the money out of his clothes, Paine ran his little shoestring capital up into the thousands before he got into the Consolidated Exchange. NEARLY EVERY ISSUE HIT. There was a clear way for the bears in the stock market to-day and they took advantage of every opportunity to hammer values. ‘The entire list felt the effect of the attack, prices being down from 1 to 4 points. The calling of loans by banks, prospective tight money through the blocking of the Aldrich bill and the loss of over $4,000,000 by the local banks to the Sub-Treasury were factors which helped the bears along. Prices quickly dropped after the open- ing, and by the end of the tirst hour the entire list showed fractional de- clines, The selling movement was in- creased on the announcement of the failure of a Boston brokerage firm, and considerable liquidation was indulged in before it was realized that the sus- pension was an unimportant one. Numerous stop ‘oss orders were un- covered, with the result that prices gave away all around, and the leading Issues showed losses of 1 per cent. The rail- road stocks were universally weaker. The local traction group was excep- tional, being well maintained at the start. Metropolitan Street Railway ad- vanced 1 1-2 per cent. and Manhattan 1 1-4 per cent,, but both advances were soon lost.
