CALLS ACTION INHUMAN. Dr. Richard H. Derby, Superintendent of the New York Eye and Ear Infirm- ary, has boycotted the nurses who struck on Gaturday and left fifty-seven helpless patients without attention. The places of the nurses have nearly all been filled and the superintendent announces that none of the strikers will ever be admitted to the institution as long as he is connected with tt. The infirmary was not opened for the admission of new patients until to-da Bix nurses are on the way from Mon! real and Boston and will errive to- night, By to-morrow Dr, Derby ex- pects to have a staff of nurses equal fn proficiency to those who left #0 abruptly. Miss Blizabeth Stewart, the new head nurse, who graduated trom the Presby- terlan Hospital Training School tor Nurees in 1896, was seen at the hospital to-day. She eald that the strike was caused by the desire of the nurses to have one of thelr own number succeed Miss MoCreedy. Miss Stewart's Statement, ‘When I came here,” she sald, ‘T found organized opposition. I had ac- cepted the place reluctantly, but when I did accept it I made up my mind that I would do my duty. I tried my best to make friends of the nurses, but I was brought here-to make certain changes and introduce certain innovations which they did not Ike. “They tried to bring about a clash on various pretexts, but finally were co pelled to object because I wore a whit gown. Of course they thought thaf, being skilled in the treatment of eye and ear diseases, their demand that I be discharged wa@ld be granted. When the demand was not granted I suppose they thought there was nothing for them to do but walk out.” The nurses say that they left the hospital for a principle. Neither Miss Steward nor Mrs. Field is a nurse trained in eye and ear treatment—in fact Mrs. Field 1s not a graduate at all. For this reason they were compelied to leave, according to their story. Dr. Derby terms the action of the nurses in abandoning the patients as (mhuman, and he has urged the etaff Physicians to use caution in employing them on private cases. Cause of the Trouble, The trouble was caused when Miss McCreedy, beloved by all the nurses, was replaced as head nurse by Miss Stewart. More dissatisfaction arose when Mrs. Field was brought over from the dispensary as assistant. She wore a white gown, looked upon by the nurses as a mark of authority, and they refused to work under her. An ultimatum was sent to Dr, Derby and when he refused to grant thelr mands they left ina boay. It is cha that before leaving they tore up the patients’ charts, disarranged the glasses and bottles and in other ways Inter- rupted the work of the hospltal.
