“ALL THE LATEST NEWS THE WORLD: THURSDAY EVENIN a ad > OF THE BUSINESS NOVEMBER 20, 1902. MANHATTAN TO. ‘LEHICH'S CHANCE INCREASE STOCK? Report that Capital Is to Be Ralsed from $48,000,000 to $60,000,000 Given as Ex- planation of Big Boom. “L” SHARES SOAR ABOVE 154 New York Central Stock Advances, but Rumor that Vanderbiits Are te Control Manhattan “L” Ie Not Credited—Market Strong. A new explanation of the boom in Manhattan and one coming from what appears to be an authoritative sourot 1s that George Gould and his associates have determined to increase the capital wtook of the Manhattan Elevated Rail- way from $48,000,000 to $60,000,000. The @tockholders rights in this increase would be worth about $12.50 2 share, « which amounts about to the increase in the stock in the past few days. The story 1s that the $12,000,000 In- Grease is to be used to pay off claims against the company, putting it on @ @lear footing. ‘The feature of the stock market to- @ay was the strength of New York Cen- tral and its steady advance in con~ mection with the continued strength of Manhattan. Manhattan Above 154, Manhattan led the market for the greater portion of the day and was firmly held by the insiders, It made a now high record, crossing 164, with sales not nearly so heavy as yesterday, This $s the highest price at which it has sold ince 1893, and the absence of any pressure to-day was considered strongly oorroborative of the existence of a pend- ing deal. George Gould and several of his ad- + wisers were reported to have held a prolonged conference to-day over the proposition to permit a change of con- @rol in the Manhattan “L" road, but oMcials of the system declined to say anything about it. Four Wall street firms which have Bought over 100,00 shares of Manhattan within two weeks for new interests were still reported buying to-day. Their ‘elients were reported to be the Standard Oll interests, which heretofore have not been identified in any way with Man- hattan. Advance in New York Central. ‘The advance in New York Central, Ike that in the traction issues, was un- accompanied by any positive news. ‘There was @ revival of the report that ft was to secure Manhattan, after all, through a lease with a guarantee of 7 per cent. dividends. This was not gen- erally accepted, because it has been ‘used for the same purpose so many times before. ‘The rest of the market was strong and in most instances higher levels were reached than those of yesterday. Missouri Pacific und all the other Gould issues were higher, The former @dvanced nearly two points from the opening, while Wabash, common and preferred, made a good gain. Butler Bros. who usually act for the ids, were heavy purchasers of Man- ttan' again, and they also took large of other Gould issues, Coal Road Stocks Up. The coal road issues, with Reading Heading, showed fractional gains, with * the exception of Lehigh Valle In the industrial list the cessation of the tencion in the Gould-Hawley-Harrl Man-Osgood contest caused all the Is. The wheat market to-day opened fairly active and a shade higher than Jast night's closing figures. Forelgn houses were buyers of December and May, which tended to help prices all round. Returned to His Office To-Day and Conferred with General Agent Schaperkotter, but Both Declined to Make a Publilc Statement. President Alfred Walter, of the Le- high Valley Railroad, whose resignation accepted yesterday at a stormy meeting of the Board of Directors in Philadelphia, would give no other re won to-day for his action than that given yesterday: “It {s due to differences of opinion regarding the management of the com- pany."* Mr. Walter returned to his olty home at No, 33 West Seventy-thind street last evening. He was at his office at No. 2% Cortlandt street at 11.90 o'clock this morning, He sent for J. F. Schaperkotter, Gen- eral Agent of the Lehigh system, and held a fifteen-minute conference with him. At {ts conclusion, Mr. Schaper- kotter satd for Mr, Waltert “There will be no statement tasued to- day regarding Mr. Walter’s retirement. The reasons given yesterday must stand for tXe present.” The resignation of President Walter, which takes effect on Nov. 30, was the subject of much comment in the bus! ness world to-day. The meeting yes- terday was the first Mr. Walter had attended in months aud was undoubt- edly the stormiest ever held by the board. Mr. Walter was put in the presidency by the Morgan-Drexel-Stotesbury in- terests in 1897, and closely followed the policy of that clique. Stockholders be some months, "it was. apparent that Mr, Walter's pollcy would not do. The meeting yesterday was the climax. It 1s sald that the road would shortly be placed on a dividend-paying basis. It fy aiso hinted that Mr. Walter's reat: pation was directed by Mr. Morgan him- It was reported in Wall etreet that F. B. Gowan, whose father was a well- known President of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad some years ago, 1d probably be chosen as Mr. Wal: ‘successor. FB. M. Gowen May Succeed Walt: PHILADEUPHIA, Nov. 20.—In finan- olal circles here the name of..F. M. Gowen {is most prominently mentioned ag the most probable successor to Alfred Walter as President of the Le- high Valley Railroad. The position is said to have been offered to and de- clined by Samuel Rea, Fourth Vice President of the Pennsylvania Rall- road, It is declared that the successoP of Mr. Walter, whoever he may be, will be one who is in accord with views of President Baer, of the Read- ing, who is also one of the Lehigh's directors, Mr. Baer has not been in accord with Mr. Walter for more than @ year, Many persons here believe that Mr. Baer himself will elected the new presi- dent of tha road. Allis Chalmers, Preferred. American Culcte, Cominon RUINED bY BANK CRASH. Scores of Millville Residents Are Left Penniless by Frauds of Building Association Secre- tary. WAS TRUSTED CITIZEN. Dividends Pald Out of Principal and Stock Which Was at a Premium Now Worth Ten Cents on the Dollar. MILLVILLE, N. J., Nov, 20,—Becatise of the collapse of the Millville Stock Buflding Association this is the bluest and most melancholy day this clty has ever known. Small merchants, mechan- ios, the frugal laboring classes, widows and others who yesterday felt secure because of their bank deposits, awoke to-day to find thempelves practically penniless. The feeling against Richard R. How- ell, the missing secretary of the de- funct association, is such that violence might be done him should he be found. Howell has been secretary of the inst!- tution since it was formed in 1874. He was considered one of the best and most trustworthy citizens of the place, But over night that feeling of pride and reliance has turned to one of bitter hat- red and contempt. George B. Langley, president of the association, has found that the concern has HMabilities of $106,000 and less than $15,000 in assets. The directors do not know by what method of bookkeeping this loss was so covered that it was not found until now. For ten years the stock has been pay- ing 5 per cent. dividends and only a few days ago it was seling at a premium of 5 per cent. To-day the stock is worth about 10 cents on the dollar. Until two years ago the income of the association had been $33,000 a year. For the last two years the income has been only $12,000, ‘The only explanation offered for the deficit was that tne methods of book- keeping permitted the secretary to r celve large sums of money paid on ac- count of the principal of outstanding mortgages and to use euch sum: ing dividends to the stockholders, Thu: for many years dividends had been pal: to them from the principal of their in- vestments instead of thelr earnings. in pay- When Howell left here on Monday he sent to President Langley and two of his associates a deed of trust calling for $30,000, but upon investigation the assets will not go over $15,000, CURB MARKET DULL.
