Cold chills ran through the passengers on a Sixth avenue Elevated train as it was rounding the high curve between One Hundred and Fourth and One Hun- dred and Sixteenth street stations at 7 o'clock last night. The even progress of the last four coaches became changed Into jerks, which sent the cars rapidly forward for a few feet, to be abruptly stopped, and as suddenly driven forward again, he second coach rocked from side to side as if it were leaving the trac! and the passengers on the rear coaches became panic-stricken and rushed to the doors, The stopping of the train prevented many from risking lfe by jumping to the crossties between the tracks. It was learned that the coupling pin between the first and second coaches had broken. The two small chains between the coaches were all that kept the train from scattering. The uneasy motion of the car was caused by a sudden tension of these chains, followed by. relaxation as the rear coaches were jerked forward and again stopped by bumping against the first co The second coach was almost pulled from the track by the chain attached to the side of the platform towards the outer portion of the curve, and this caused the tremendous swaying. ‘The train was stopped by Hugere Sher- man, the guard, 10 stood where the coupling broke He aro across the e cord, signal- minutes to replace the P The passengers were so much rightened some of them wanted to Ket 1 walk to the One Hu i Sixteenth street station. the train could not be start curve again without accident, Tt is belleved If the oute: snapped might have sent the front of th coach over the high trestle, possibly re- sulting in the others following ft. ——— a New York Men Hurt—One Killed, if two despatches last night, one from Joseph Crawfont, Superintendent of the New York Division of the Jersey C 4, and another from Cincinnati.
