He tried to stab the clerk and the porter of the house with a knife, and it was only after @ terrific struggle that he was overcome and taken to Bellevue Hos- pital. Late Monday night the man reached the hotel, registered and was assigned to a room by Anthony 1, Ameprano, the night clerk, ‘After that little was seen of Wat- fous until 4 o'clock this morning. Then Ameprano noticed that he was stand- ing outside the door of the hotel, As he looked, the cierk saw the man sud- denly jump high in the air, kick him- self and froth at the mouth, Then he drew a pocket knife and rushed at a servant who just entering the place. He ficurished the knife in the air, yelled and made a vicious lunge at the head of the clerk. Ameprano dodged just in t'me to es- cape the blade. Daniel Porter, the night porter, was ten feet away, and the in- furiated man turned on him, and at- tempted to stab him. Finally a hallboy, waiting for a mo- ment ot advantage, seized the knife hand of the man, and in the few sec- onds he held it Clerk Ameprano had thrown himself on the man with all his force. Three hackmen who stood in front of the hotel, attracted by the #ounds of the struggle, hurried in, and the maniac was secured, By the time the ambulance came from Bellevue Hos- pital, the man was somewhat quiet. Crazy from Toothache, Mamie Cook, a servant employed in the Belvedere House, Eighteenth street and Fourth avenue, became violently insane shortly after midnight this morning and aroused the guests, many of whom thought the hotel was on fire. ‘A burried call was sent for an am- bulance, and the woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital and placed in the in- wane pavslion, A tow days ago Miss Cook had four teeth extracted, and it was said at the tinto, Nicaragua. Customs Will Be Seized to Settle the Indemnity. WASHINGTON, D. C., April %4.—Exact Official information has been received as t Britain's belligerent steps in ua, British troops are to be by the British forces, and British officers are to exercise the functions of collectors of customs, At the same time Nicaraguan local commerce is to be crippled by a biock- ade. ‘The limit of time allowed Nicaragua to yleld expires to-morrow, and the block- ade, landing of troops and seisure of custom-houses is to begin immediately thereafter. ‘There is good reason to believe that Nicaragua {s not likely to yield, but will allow British troops to occupy Corinto in order that conspicuous attention may be drawn to what is regarded by Nicara- gua as an invasion of the Monroe Doc- trine. LONDON, April &.—The Foreign Office to-day authorized the Associated Pre: to state that the news sent out from Corinto, Nicaragua, yesterday as to the arrival of three British warships there, the Royal Arthur, Satellite and Wild Swan, for the purpose of pressing the claim of Great Britain was correct. It is added that instructions to the British Admiral on the Pacific station were sent some time ago to insist upon Nicaragua's compliance with the terms of the ultimatum of Great Britain or, failing such compliance, to blockade the port of Corinto ani seige the customs offices within two days after, and thus enforce satisfaction from Nicaragua for the insolent manner in which British subjects have been treated there. SPAIN HAS ASSURANCES. Grent Britain, Dei nd Other Nations Will Remain Neutral. HAVANA, April 2%4.—The Minister of the Colontes, Senor Castellanos, accord- ing to advices received here from Mad- rid, has notified the Spanish Govern- ment officials here that the Government of Spain has received assurances from Great Britain, Denmark, Santo Domingo and Haytl that the strictest neutrality will be observed during the trouble with the Insurgents of Cuba. It is stated that the British Govern- ment has reiterated its instructions to the British authorities in the Antilles to do everything possible to prevent the carrying out of filibustering projects. It is also stated that Costa Rica has also assured Spain of her friendship and has instructed the Costa Rican Min- ister at Paris to go to Madrid in order to personally assure the Spanish Govern- ment of the sincere friendship of Costa Rica, —_-+— MAD RUSH OF WOMEN.
