WHOOP! WHAT A RUN, Fourteen Policomen’s Mad Chase Up the Bowery This Morning. Used “L” Trains and Wagons Amid the Wildest Kind of Tumult. Daring Criminal, Who Had Dumped Snow in the Street, Escaped. Fourteen policemen from three pre- cincts roused wild commotion on the Bowery at 2 o'clock this morning by their mad chase after the driver of a dirt-cart up that always-allve thorough- | fare. After all the excitement was over it was found that they had captured the | wrong man, | The most eager interest prevailed in the ten blocks over which the pursult was made, \ ‘The policemen used wagons and Ele-| vated trains, their legs and lungs. The excitement had {ts beginning three | blocks below Canal street. By the time the | cart got to Canal street, Policemen Hays, Walsh, Finn, Miller, Granville, Garrison and Nevins were running after the cart. Never had such a collection of policemen in motion been seen on the Bowery. People looked from windows and yell- ed; dozens of men ran half-clothed from lodging-houses and pushed the thing along. All the people who happened out so early in the morning helped to swell the pursuing mob, Soon from the near- by precincts, the Eldridge and Mulberry street stations, policemen came to see what occasioned the wild shouts. There was an Elevated train drawing into the Canal street station just as the officer reached the corner. Up the stairs went Walsh, three steps at a time, and caught the last car of the train as it was leaving the station, Policeman John Churchill proved also to be a man of advance ideas, Just hind the running policeman there cam up a news company’s wagon, taking th morning, papers to the Grand Centr Depot.
