The public as a whole never has been completely in sym pathy with prohibition; failure to er it and the ragged, haphazard methods employed have made few new converts, Unless Andrews’ plan is more effective than it seems to be from published re- ports, the new enforcement organization likely will give the wets just one more leg to stand on and prohibition will be much the farce its enemies say it is now The public cannot be blamed for its present attitude of skepticism, Few per- sons with any power of observation at all can honestly contradict the statement that drinking is more widespread now than it was before the adoption of the 18th amendment. There are a lot of folks who longer to be lulled into sleep with the statement that time alone can cure the drinking habit and that while drinking may continue now under so-called prohibi- tion, another generation will have forgot- ten all about it. It’s the coming generation that will fight hardest for’drink if its members follow the education they are now receiv- ing. With gin parties galore and drinks common in households that knew nothing about booze before prohibition, the younger generation can be dependéd on to go thru with the hard-liquor program on a scale more heart-breaking than ever was dreamed of in the wet days of old. Clearly Mr. Andrews has a big job be- fore him. It is up to him to prove the practicability of prohibition. is at stake 1 ‘ i) TZENNETH WATSON, a Washington | ; newspaper correspondent, writing for } ; The Star, suggests that Lincoln C. Life logically might have led him along easy and pleas- ant lines—a gentleman dabbler in poli ‘a. patron of commendable philanthropies. + But early im lifé Adam Beck dreamed adream. It gripped him. Its vast possi- bilities—its crusading call—inspired him. He consecrated himself to its accomplish- “ment. And, gradually, the great hydro-electric power project, built on the principle of public ownership and operation, came into being—and grew. There was need of vis- _ ioned leadership. There was need of organ- izing skill. There was need of amazing capacity for hard work. There was need of indomitable courage. There was need of ruthless fighting qualities. There was need of stern integrity. Beck supplied them all. Corporate interests were hostile and powerful. Opponents of public ownership of public utilities set themselves to thwart and destroy. The is something radically wrong about our use of this form of legal pickpocketing. We all know that alimony was intended to provide for women unable to work, and their children, and in a great many in- stances, of course, it is an entirely just and necessary measure. But an able-bodied, childless, intelligent woman should be willing to take a month- ly allowance from a man whom she does not consider fit to live with as a husband, The pr ling ill of alimony comes from the fact that so many tender young things nowadays stép to the altar with that secret thought in their minds, “If I don’t like it I can get alimony.” They marry, live with their husbands a couple of years or less, get a divorcee and as much alimony as they can squeeze from him until they find another and woolier sheep to shear. There are lots of women who are frankly in the alimony business. They live well by means of this trade. In spite of the good it often may render to unprotected wives and children, one somehow harbors a sneaking suspicion that if it were wiped off the legal slate, there would not be as many divorces by half. It is no “Why such stress on cleanness in gasoline”? A fair question. The answer you'll find interesting. You can readily understand why a physically clean gasoline makes the better motor-fuel. Certainly—and Associated is purified by special processes, one of which is well-defined, complete filtration_. Another kind of cleanness is expressed in terms of chemistry and has to do with “boiling points.” Associated Gasoline is distilled by a method which gives to this clean motor fuel, the correct “chain” or range of boiling points. They start at the more volatile parts and gradually rise, on through the heavier or power-producing parts or “fractions”! ‘That is why each charge ignites instantly and “burns” or explodes completely on the down stroke, yielding every ounce of energy, and leaving no unburned or wasted fuel to gum up the cylinders. That describes clean cut action— honest gasoline—"more miles to the gallon’’—sustained quality.
