He rolled on one side and atretched and yawned, slowly collect- ing his thoughts. The events of the night passed In review before his mind's eyes. Toba's cry on the mountain-side, her wall of grief at his lose, her— What was that? The rove stirred. It rumbled. The carth shook. Clark leaped blood ran cold. could not. Paralyzed with fright, Clark looked full at the monster. The beast he had ridden the day before wallowed in the sand before him. Now indeed had come his end, he thaught. He wished that he had re- mained behind in Toba’s cave and taken her knife. What a fool he had been to sleep and allow this monster to creep upon him. How easily he could have foretold {ts approach; the very ground shook when It tread. Clark, despite his terror, studied the monster. As the beast slowly raised its head, Clark noted that it had only one eye, a great sleepy heavy-lidded optic, misty and calm, Fascinated, Clark stared at It. Now the monster's great jaws opened and it yawned, apparently unaware of his presence. . In terror Clark gripped the handle of the knife he had taken from Toba's cave so tightly that its rough handle hurt his flesh, his future, to his feet.
