THE SEATTLE STAR—SATURDAY, SEPT. 13, 1919. __ It has been some time since Seattle has had the honor of welcoming you. Much water has passed over the wheel of time. And all of us have renewed our patriotism, our faith in the eternity of justice, and our determination to make of this, our country, a place where each citizen, in proportion to his merit, may receive reward. Seattle greets you; you have fought a good fight; whether or not you have won all you fought for is unseen as yet; anyway, you fought. Seattle too has done some fighting. Here in the Northwest we battled with time and the elements and weak human nature, and conquered. We led the procession when it came to delivering ships in the nation’s time of need. We led in hard, efficient labor, and in careful haste. Each new call for funds, for aid, for our money, or our labor, or our sons found us 100 per cent American. And when the red hand of anarchy stretched out to smother us, and make us serfs of the shiftless, the ignorant, the reckless and the improvident, we struck up that hand and decisively settled for the nation the question of Bolshevism. Our sons rest under many seas, in many lands. The roll of our dead is a glorious one and the work of our living gives us a thrill of glad pride when we look upon it. Seattle, Mr. President, as an American city, a city of loyal hearts and happy homes, a city set upon a hill whose light need not be hidden, and in whose beacon of safety no red danger signal flares—Seattle welcomes you heartily today.
