PORTLAND, Ore., June 6.—The latest issue of the University @ Oregon bul- letin is devoted to an account of & new seal fossil by Professor Thomas Con- don, the venerable paleontologist of the Pacific Coast. % The fossil is catalogued as Dermato- phoea Oregonen: d is of interest to geologists all over the world as being the oldest fossil of its kind ever discovered. It is especially important since it goes far to substantiate the theory that certain marine carnivora like the seal family took their origin from terrestrial carnivora of the dog family or its ancestors. The onlnloh of Huxley and Mivart that se: derived from the bear is nruuc-lly destroyed by the new fossil seal, since it was discovered in a miocene forma- tion of sandstone much older than any known formation containing bear fos- sils.
