Mayor John P. Overton, when re- quested for a statement for The Call concerning the outlook, sald: “The peo- ple of Santa Rosa are not at all dis- mayed by the result of the earthquake and fire. Their animosity being in-| flamed by this @enial a conflict resulted. The Americans threw a stream of water from a hose upon the Mexicans and in the riot the American, Mr. Metcalf, was the office and lumber yard were burned and two Mexicans died. A gen- eral disorder followed. The American employes of the concern armed thom-‘ selves and their partisans on one sid and the strikers on the other, the re- sult being three Americans killed and ten Mexicans. The night was p&s»p in comparative tranquillity. ()n hc second day hostilities were ren but .ne announcement of the romlng of Governor Ysabel contributed some- what to calm the minds of all. The, Governor came at 10:30 a. m. and went | through the town accompanied by Colonel Greene, president of the mining -ompany, and two other persons rep- resenting the Government. They | d a number of groups of excited ans, who 1gs of the Goverr arms. In the employes of the company remained armed. In the afternoon, and without any known reason, there was a new disturbance, and firearms were dis- charged in various parts of the town, as a result of which two Americans | and six Mexicans were killed and a number were wounded. Governor Ysabel endeavored to repress this dis- order, but he did not have the forces| to do it, inasmuch as among the Ameri- cans and Mexicans there were more than 3000 men, many of them armed. The local police was tireless in the discharge of its duty, but it was small in_number. During the afternoon of the same day there arrived forty-three rurales and thirty guards of the fiscal gendarmes. The night was passed in relative quiet- mess. On the morning of the third day seventy men of the rived and twenty of the national guard. General Luis_E. Torres came on the third day at 7 a. m., having proceeded from Torin, Rio Yaqui, where he re- ceived the mnews. Immediately after his arrival he joined in the work of the Governor, seconding all his efforts. We repeat that order has been estab- lished and public tranquillity is more | firmly established each moment. On the night of the 2d inst. an order was ied that disarmed everybody who | was carrying arms, Americans and | Mexicans alike, and some arms have been seized. Yesterday and day before sterday passed without the slightest gn of disturbance. Business has beén resumed and more workmen are re- lurnln? to the mines and shops. For the information of persons whom you serve with news we state that the pop- | ulation of Cananea is something: more than 20,000 people scattered in villages stretching over the valleys and foot- hills for a length of six miles. . Rev. Mr. Ferguson said that he had committed mo ecclesiastical crime, but that he had resigned to prevent the embarrassment of the ‘members of the diocese. Pundit Krishna had been invited by Rev. Mr. Ferguson to fill the latter's pulpit. The Hindoo attacked the Amer- ican church in general for assuming to send missionaries to his country to con- vert his people. He said, in effect, that American missionaries were incapable, and that the Americans had better keep them At home; that his country did not want them. Rev. Mr. Ferguson later apologized for the Pundit's remarks, saying that the visitor was incapable of expressing himself in the English lan- guage. bt S Pl L State Librarian Is Re-elected.
