The Curtis sailed from here on the morning of April 17, bound for Hono- lulu with a full cargo of general mer- | chandise. That night at 9 o'clock, when about sixty miles oft the Farallon Isl- ands, the lookout sighted a vessel in the distance bearing directly toward them. The captain was called and at once came on deck. The night was slightly hazy, but not thick. As the approach- |ing vessel did not seem to alter her course, Captain Kelly of the Curtis de- cided to change his course and was in the act of doiny 80 when the ves- sel, which proved to be the four-masted schooner Mindoro, crashed Into the starboard quarter aft the mizzen-mast of the Curtis, tearing away the lower d | rigging of the mizzen-mast, smashing the rall and main water ways for a distance of twenty feet and demolisn- ing the cabin, The force of the tmpact caused the Mindore to lose her jibboom, which fell with a great crash on the deck of the bark, kiliing Bdward Downing, the second mate. instantly, and badly wounding Captain Kelly on the head and arms. THe Mindoro, which was light, bounced away from the Curtis like a ball and disappeared into the darkness without- trying to give any assistance to the crippled bark. Captain Kelly was unconscious when | picked up on the deck and it was some hours before he could be revived. First Mate Pat A. Hern at once put the vessel about and made for port, whichi he reached on April 18. A passenger by the name of Crock- ett, who was asleep {n the cabin at the time, nearly lost his life, as his bunk l | and the whole side of his cabin were, smashed to atoms. Texas and other Sonlhw-tnrn States are the principal buyers, but there 1s a fairly good de- mand from the north and a better movement in the latter direction is predicted In some quarters. | Fresh Fruits continue to move free- ly at satisfactory prices, and a sub- stantial increase in the demand is quoted from day to day. Oranges, which have been arriving freely of late, are slightly lower. Cherries are | easier under greatly Inereased re- ceipts. Gooseberries and early Black- berries are coming to hand in gmall quantities, but as they require cook- ing there Is very little call for them and growers would do well to send them elsewhere for ths present. | _Vegetables are in good supply,. and those kinds easily prepared for the table are selling well, while such de- scriptions as Cucumbers, Tomatoes and new Potatoes, which are regarded @s luxuries at present, are selling slowly. | Dairy Produce is moving freely, but | the market is unsettled, owing to the | crowded condition of the whart, whera most recelvers are located, and the lack of factlities for handling of con- signments. The project for securing @ more favorable location, with ade- | Quate transportation facilities, is as- | suming tangible form, and it is hoped that the trade will soon be in a po-~ sition to handle all consignments that come this way without much dim- culty.
