DEPDSIT BOKES Vaults Are Doing an Extensive Business. Populace Anxious to Stow Away Valuables. More than 1000 persons and firms in this city paid their coin yesterday for rent of steel boxes in the safe de- posit vaults that have been opened— those of the Union Trust Company, the Mercantile Trust Company and the Crocker-Woolworth National Bank. No such rush for safe deposit facili- ties has ever taken place in San Fran- cisco before. The news published in The Call that the vaults had resumed business was circulated rapidly and with great ef- fect. previously been safe deposit box rent- ers andw who thronged to the vaults to inspect their securities and valu- ables, hundreds of others who wanted to rent traveled in the same direction. The custodians of the vaults had all they could do to meet the new busi- ness and attend to the old patrons. The system provided to guard all the safes and boxes involves some time for each customer. Every new comer {is compelled to register a varlety of details and sign his name in several piaces for the guldance of those in charge. When a bex is to be opened the renter cannot get into it without help.’ Neither vaults. numbered, but the number does not correspond with How the numbering differs is a secret in each vault, the system varying. Consequently if a key is lost by the owner and is picked up by another person the last mentioned cannot use it. To attempt to do so would imme- de=tely involve detection. No box can be opened with one key. The renter's key is not of any use without that of the custodian, who has what Is known as ‘“the master key.” The custodian takes the rent- er's key and also the master key and unlocks the safe in the presence of the renter. No two keys in any vault If any one is lost it is nec- essary to break open the safe that it fitted. After this a new lock with en- tirely different keys are used for the can the custodians of the | safe in question. Owing to these precautions the safe deposit custodians had every minute of their time taken up yesterday in atténdance upon patrons. The abso- lutely perfect condition of the vaults when reopened caused many persons who had valuable papers and Jjewels in their homes to remove them and place them where they were safe and easily accessible. This movement will continue for some day The capacity of the vaults is larfe. They contain many thousand safes. ——— Insurance, In view of numerous applications a| special department for collection of insurance losses has been established, in charge of competent experts. A. Sarah Bernhardt, the greatest ac- tress of modern times, announced when she commenced her American! tour that she would come to Califor- nia, even if she was forced to play in a tent. This was not necessary, as the energetic manager of the Majes- tic Theater, H. W. Bishop, undertook to have the great actress appear at his tehcater. Since the disaster the management gave up‘all idea of her attempting to play in thig section with an immense company of foreign artists, numbering over fifty. But they did not know the character of this remarkable woman. In spite of all, she is comipg. It has been arranged to, have her appear at “Ye Liberty Playhouse,” Ogkland, and she opens next Monday night in her great success, “La Sor- clere” (The Sorceress). Investigation Is to Be Made by the Authorities. Organized gangs of thieves 'are en- gaged In looting the provision laden trains that are now on their way to/ this city with supplies for the fire suf-| ferers. Colonel Maus, who is in chargo‘; of the soldiers of the Fourth District, ;wlth_ headquarters at Portsmouth {Square, is authority for this statement. ‘‘According to' the Information re- | ceived at our neadquarters,” said the colonel ‘vesterday, *“wholesale looting of hundreds of provision cars is now j golng on. Ross Morgan, an Oekland civil engi-| | seer, who,* since April 19 has been in charge of the rellef supplies at the Ferry depot, said yesterday: “There has besn nc looting of sup- | plles here, but I guess this s the only place that has escaped. They have broken open gz c partly unloaded it, and then, with {childlike confidence in thegrest of the | world, closed the doors and driven {away.
