PARLOR PLAS FOR HONUHENT Raising of American Flag Over This City in 1846 Will Be Commemorated SITE ALREADY CHOSEN Statue Will Be Reared in Portsmouth Square Named After Montgomery's Sloop In the near future there will be erected in the center of Portsmouth Square in this city a monument to commemorate the ralsing of the American fiag over the village of Yerba Buena in July, 1846, by Commander Montgomery and jackles from the United States sloop of war Portsmouth, when under order of Com- modore Sloat he took possession of the territory in the name of the United States. Pacific Parlor of the Native Sons of the Golden West will conduct the cere- mony. A committee composed of James D. Phelan, T. P. Martin, Jesse C. Allan, A. Latham, F. D. Willey, Edward Lynch and District Attorney Willlam H. Lang- don is in charge of the arrangements. The statue, which is now being mod- eled by Douglas Tilden and will cost $5000, will represent a United States saflor of the days of the mavy of "4 in the act of hauling the Stars and Stripes to the masthead. This will rest on a high base made of a stone from every quarry in the State. The parlor has the assurance that each quarry will contribute a stone and these will be ready for shipment when asked for. Ex-Mayor Phelan has contributed $500 toward this monument fund and the par- lor will donate a goodly share, but how much that will be has not yet been de- cided upon, for the reason that several contributions by San Franciscans, who are deeply interested in landmarks, have promised to contribute. It is also pos- sible that some of the other parlors of the city will assist Pacific Parlor in this undertaking, which is to mark a most historic spot, from the patriotic stand- point, in San Francisce. The veterans of the Mexican War will take part in the unveiling of the monu- ment, as well as the Society of California Pioneers, State and city officlals and the order of the ative Sons. ————————— Fraternity Bangquet at Palace.
