RICH AMERICAN WAL REJECTS FUTURE EARLS Miss Colgate Is Said to Have Lost Her Heart on This Side. Earl, which occurred five months after their marriage, she remained a widow for several years and then espoused as her third husband Martin Kennard, a commoner. But he makes an uncommonly accommodating husband and is quite content to let his brilliant wife run things to suit herself. The forth- coming season will find her one of the leading American hostesses. Her daughter, Miss Colgate, though by no means a beauty, {8 a pleasant looking girl and is immensely popular. Her friends here say she has a penchant for 8 man of her own country who’is far from being a millionaire, and that is said to be the reason why her mother will not consent to her marriage. It is quite a pretty little story and it glves a cer- tain cachet to Miss Colgate, who re- ceives a great deal of fashionable com- miseration from men and a trifle of con- tempt from women because she is so simple-minded as to allow romance and the idea of “love in a cottage” to enter the WHITE HOUSE BRIDE WILL VISIT EUROPE Reported That She Is to Be Presented at Court of England. e P into her mind. The Board of Works at once called a special meeting for tomorrow morning, at which the plans will be regularly adopted and approved and then transmitted anew to the Board of Supervisors. In this way it is expected that there will be no oppor- tunity for any attempt to invalidate the proceedings owing to a technicality not having been complied with. ‘When the City Engineer filed the plans with the Supervisors last Monday he did so_directly, the Board of Works not be- ing consulted in the matter. Commission- ers KEagan and Aigeltinger expressed themselves rather forcibly because their board had been slighted. Woodward’s only desire in filing the plans immediately with the Board of Supervisors was to avoid any possible delay in the proceeding. It has been deemed advisable, however, after securing a legal opinion from Abraham Ruef, to comply with the char- ter, which requires the plans to be se- cured from the Board of Works through the City Engineer and thus avold any legal complications in the matter. At tomorrow's meeting of the Board of Supervisors it is likely that an ordinance will be passed fixing a date for the recep- tion of bids for the construction of the municipal Geary street road. The date will be fixed so that at least thirty days will elapse before the proposais will be filed with the board. It is thought that some day In April will be selected for the purpose and that work on the road will be started either in May or June of this year, unless something unforeseen occurs to delay the project in the meantime. ————e— Presbyterian Social Union to Meet. As is usual in the case of brides she will wear her wedding gown, which was remarkable for its elegance and sim- plicity. Mrs. Whitelaw Reld does not intend to present her daughter until one of the late courts as she wishes her to remain in the schoolroom as long as possible; indeed, I was told the other day that the little lady was to continue her music and painting even after she had made her official bow to society. She is charming, very bright, and talkative, and she has already ac- quired great importance in the matri- monial market, There is mention of the Duke of Lein- ster as poor. GIVES DATA ON THE / NEW OFFICIAL MAPS City Engineer Sends Infor- mation to Merchants’ Asso- ciation Relative to Plan. City Engineer Woodward yesterday sent a communication to the Merchants’ Assoclation containing information rela- tive to the preparation of mew maps of real estate, in compliance with a recent act of the Legislature, for the making of plans for numbering of real estate in this city so that assessments may be num- bered. The real estate dealers are getting uneasy, because the new plan may cause confusion and trouble in the conveyances of recal estate. The plan divides the city into districts, and each lot will have a district number, block number and its own subdivision number. The plan does away with description by metes and bounds formerly in use. The plan will effect a large saving to the city, as it will reduce the work in the Assessor’s office. Each block will have a separate sheet upon which the map will be traced. There are forty-one sheets for the fifty-vara subdivisions and forty-four sheets for the 100-vara blocks. It is a question whether the saving effected to the city by the new plan will compensate for the lack of definite Information in the description of property. Hereafter the bill from the Tax Colector's office will con- tain merely the numbers appertaining to each lot, instead of the metes and bounds. For the latter information reference must be made to the official maps, which will be placed on file in the Recorder’s office. The Merchants’ Association intends to in- vestigate the matter with a view to deter- mining if the new plan is a good one. ‘Woodward states that he simply complies with the provisions of the code in making the maps, and he will proceed with the work until the entire city has been mapped out on separate sheets covering each block. e No man pays more for a thing than d{ha who sacks it for nothins.
