M SERIDUS ROW N THE MILITIA Resignation 61’ a Captain Is Followed by an Order Sum- moning a Court-Martial COMPANY STANDS FIRM Members Refuse to Hold an Election to Name Sue- cessor to Their Commander Spectal Dispatch to The Call LOS ANGELES, Jan. 25.—Thers is a seri- ous row in the First Brigade, Natiohal Guard of California, and it all originated in the failure of a humble private to put on a shirt when he went to regimental in- spection. From that beginning has fol- lowed the resignation of a company com- mander and caustic critielsm of the bri- ade chief of staff. General Wankowskl, Who gommands the brigade, to-day or- dered a general court-martial to convene 'to try such cases as may be properly brought before it,” the order reads, but it is believed that the real purpose is to sift the entire matter and possibly try Lieutenant Colonel W. G. Schrefber, as- shutfmt adjutant general on the brigade staft. Colonel Wilhelm of the regular army recently came here for the purpose of conducting an inspection of the compan- fes of the Seventh Infantry, and when he put Company F, Captain McKenna com- manding, through its paces, the perform- ance of the company was not up to stand- ard. Colonel Wilhelm was in no very gond humor when he began inspecting the men's uniforms. Down the line he went, ordering the men to open their blouses. Ir the third set of fours he came upon a private who refused to open his blouse despite orders. He would not budge even when the orders were re- peated. Calling for his first sergeant, he whispered loudly encugh to be heard all over the armory: “I can't open up because I hain't got no shirt on.” Subsequently Captain McKenna accused Lieutenant Colonel Schreiber of making fun of the company and of him and the | Captain tendered his resignation. The resignation was not in proper form, and was returned to him. The company stood by its captain and refused to hold an clection for his successor, and the de- moralization of the company finally be- came such that a court-martial will de- termine who is to blame. PORTLAND, Or., Jan. 25.— FPostal cards bearing the “Black Hand,” the symbol of - death used by an Itallan society as a warning to it's victims of impending destruction, have been re- ceived by a number of the most promi- nent wholesale merchants of the city in each morning’s mail regularly for the last three mornings. Each card, be- sides bearing the black imprint. has under the hands a few scrawled words informing the recipient of the card that he has a certain number of days yet to Hve. The first cards received placed the Iimit at four days, and each morning the number of days is made one less. According to these cards some deadly fate awalits these merchants on Satur- day morning. ———e———————— Test Rifled 0il Pipe Line.
