NEW YORK, Jan 3.—Bradstreet's visible supply of grain statement Wwill not be issued until tO-mMOIrow. CHICAGO BOARD OF TRADE. Future Grain and Provisions. CHICAGO, Jan. wheat market was firm_from the start. The initial quotations on May were up isc to %@%c at 88%c to 88% @8s3c. Throughout the day shorts and commission houses were active buyers and early in the session the market received good support from prominen: bulls. The firm feel- ing at the opening was due principally to an advance in the price of wheat at Liverpool. Later came adviees from an English crop Statisticlan to the effect that wet weather in Argentina_was delaying the harvesting of wheat. From the same source came the re- port that shipments from ports on the Dan ube will probably soon be cut off because of the end of navigation as a result of ice block- ades. A report that American manufacturers of farm implements have received many let- ters from Russia concerning orders strength- ened the bullish feeling. Stili another sup- port for the bulls was the fact that Brad- street's weekly report of the world's vistble supply of wheat did not come out. Many local traders sold short in expectation that the report would show a large increase, and when the announcement was made that the report would not be issued to-day ‘the majority of the traders covered in haste. The range on May for the day was between 88iic and 88%@88%c. The market closed firm, with May up Y @%e at 553 TLocal recelpts were somewhat less than had been estimated and helped the corn market. May closed steady, }c up at é4lc. The oat market was very quiet, but prices held steady throughout the day. May closed unchanged at 323%@32%c¢. The provisions market was firm, despite a decline of 5c in the price of live hogs. stocks of lard were shown by the monthly report to be much smaller than generally ex- pected. This was the chief cause of the steady market. The volume of trading, how- ever, was small. At the close May pork was unchanged, lard up 2%c and ribs were 2igc hizher. Local agents for morthern mills say that their mills are closing down owing to the poor demand for Flour, and this is expected to affect recelpts from ‘that quarter. Besides, large quantities are being fed to stock in this State owing to the deficiency in green feed. The circular of Somers & Co. says of Hay: “Shipments of Hay for the past two weeks have amounted in all to 5410 tons, an average of 2700 tons per week, which is about the same amount as we have been receiving right along. Trade, however, has been: very dull owing to the holiday season and the above quantity has been far more than our market could well stand.- The railroad company is now furnish- ing sutficient cars to all districts shipping Hay, $0_that we note hegvier arrivals by rail. “The bulk of arrivals haye consisted of me alum grades, very litdle choice Hay arrving and ,almost nothing in the line of cheaper grades. The lack of green feed in the country has compelled farmers and stockmen to feed baled Pay, and they have been using the low- er grades, which has cut off the supply of this kind for our market here. ““We are pleased to report that 1000 tons of the Government order has been awarded in San Francisco, shipment to be made within the present month. Although this is a con- siderable quantity, it will make no appreciable difference to our market, as there has been con- siderable double compressed Hay on storage in San clsco awaitir— export demand. “‘Alfalfa and Straw remalin about the same, the former in ,rather good demand and t latter dragging badly.” BRAN—$20 per ton.
