Edward Ginley, the club’s president, was in the chair and there was a large attendance of its mem- bers. In speaking of the question of opea- ing the cemeterles H. U. Jaudin re- minded the mesting that should the courts at last decide In favor of such a movement property would deteriorate in value to an alarming extent. In the preamble to a resolution which he sub- mitted it is stated that the effect of closing the cemeteries could readily be seen by the advanced prices of real es- tate in the vicinity of the grounds and the impetus giving to bullding, both resi- dences and business places being erected It was also urged that if the cemeteries were removed Richmond district could then have direct communication with the city by the opening of Pine, Bush, Sutter, Post, O'Farrell, Ellis and Eddy streets, thus adding millions of dollars to the as- sessment rolls that now escape taxation. The following resolution was passed: Resolved, That the City Attorney is hereby respectfully requested to defend the action now pending in the Circuit Court with all the vigor possible; and further, that the Board of Super- visors and Board of Health are earnestly re- quested to use every means in thelr power, whether executive or legislative, for the pui pose of preventing the reopening of any of the cemeterfes in San Francisco. A committee comnosed of H. U. Jaudin, George S. Baum and Edward Gimley was elected to deal with the matter. O. K. Cushing complained bitterly of the “poor postal service in the district” and Jaudin said that It took three days to deliver a registered letter in the city. Dr. F. C. Muller strengthened the com- plaint with his knowledge of the short- comings of the service. Jaudin stated that it was 11:30 o’clock in the morning before the first mail reached his house. Cushing and Dr. Muller were appointed a committee to interview Postmaster Fisk on the subject. G. A. Blank brought up the saloon question in the district and it was re- solved that the Supervisors be requested before granting any more licenses or transfers to communicate with the club. Hoodlumism on the corner of Third avenue and Clement street is a'condition that the club determined to stamp out. It was stated by several of the speakers, the president acquiescing, that the insult- ing language used to young women and children was such that they could not be suffered to go on domestic errands. It was resolved to .communicate with the Chief of Police at once and have those responsible for the state of affairs answer for their behavior. The prospective “Dreamland” was dealt a severe blow by the Rev. E. R. Raley and others who consider that the at- traction would be no advantage to the district. —_—— ' SERGEANT CILLS EXPLAINS HIS MYSTERIOUS ‘ACTIONS Because Woman Whe Took Acid Was Daughter of Brother Officer He ‘Wanted to Protect Her. The mysterious actions of Sergeant Cills, who prevented the hospital offi- cials from performing their dutle, early Monday morning when they called at the Linda Vista apartment house, Turk and Jones streets, to take to the hospital a woman known as Ruth’ Chapman, whose real name is Celia Egan, who had drunk carbolic acid, were explained by the officer to Chief of Police Dinan yesterday. Cills' explanation was that he had learned that the woman was the daughter of a brother officer, Corporal Egan of the Harbor Station, and he tried to protect her from notoriety. Chief Dfnan did not commend his act, and he was warned to perform his duty in the future. 1 day yesterday the woman man- aged to keep herself in seclusion, as did her male companion, who is said to be connected with the auditing de- partment of the Southern Pacific Rail- road. The couple had been drinking during the evening and it was a quarrel that caused ber to drink the acid. She can partly thank the excessive quantity of alcohol she had in her stomach for saving her life, as she had drunk enough of the acid to prove fatal in or- dinary cases. § Last night Cills called at the Central Emergency Hospital and apologized to Chiet Surgeon Millar for his actions. —_—e————————— DRIVES OFF ASSAILANT.—What appeared tc be onother hold-up was reported to the lice at the Hall of Justice yesterday. Mrs. ay Clement, residing at The Abbotsford, on Broadway, near Larkin street, was accosted b 2 man near the hotel shortly after 8 o'cloci Tuesday evening. After the etranger had uttered several insulting remarks Mrs. Clement struck him in the face and received a blow ir return. The plucky woman then picked up a club, and when the intruder had been struck on the head several times he took to his heels. The police do not think that robbery was in- tended. —_—— THIEF ROBS SAILORS.—Willlam Morck, who claims to be a machinist, was arrested Jest night at Second and Howard streets by Otficers. Conlon and McGowan and charged at the City Prison with burgiary. He entered the rooms of Thomas Jonnes and Bd Clements, two sailors on the Britlsh ship Martinique, and stole a silver watch and chain from each. The sallors identified Morck as the man they saw fleeing from the ship. The Do Ul ey SAN FRANCISCO. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 3, 1906: The above is for $1.00 Tickets.
