SAN BERNARDINO, Jan. 3.—Slowly but surely the Salton Sea iy advancing under the pressure of the waters of the Colorado River. Not only is the great sea spreading toward the Southern Pa- cific tracks, but the water is encroach- ing upon some of the cholcest agricul- tural lands in the Coachella Valley. This is the gist of a report made by Joseph Marchant, John P. Haight Jr. ]‘and T. M. McFadden, who have just returned from a trip to the desert, and who have made careful observations of the Salton Sea conditions. Said Mr. McFadden: The main line of the Southern Pacific is be- ing moved as fast as possible to the higher ground, which can only be found along the mountain chain that extends the entire length of the Salton Sea. It i said the sea is gain- ing in volume the rate of half an inch every twenty-four hours. The Salton Sea is gradually submerging the fertile valley ahd if not checked the water will be 197 feet in depth where now stands the little town of Mecca. 1f on the other hand the flow of the Colorado River into the Salton basin is stopped the Coachella Valley will soon be ome of the richest farming communities in the great | Southwest. The Southern Pacific is making a | herofc effort to stop the water from flowing into the basin. G KELLOGH 0.
