H. Thompson of Santa Barbara have surrendered to Mrs. Mary Blick, wife of Policeman Blick, the custody of her little one. Shortly after the child's birth Mrs. Blick was taken seriously 111, and the little one was placed In a home. There Mr. and Mrs. Thompson found it and took it to rear as their own. Recently Mrs. Blick asked for the return of her baby, but Mr. and Mrs. Thompson refused to give it up. Then Mrs. Blick instituted habeas corpus proceedings; but yesterday coun- sel for the mother announced that the little one had been returned to her, so Judge Graham dismissed’ the writ. —_——— | “Christmas Time in the Old Country.” 1t you are golng to spend your Christmas in the old country remember that the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Agent can book you unon'h to any British, Scandinavian, German T Port. They | are Inclined now to doubt that Sargent had an accomplice. BSargent told them that he knew his accomplice as “Joe.” He thought his other name was Dorsch, | but was not quite sure. ‘Joe” he said| used ‘o work at Pinole and was noted | for his red hair. He met him accidental- | ly and “Joe” at once fell in with the| proposition. Sargent’s wife and his stepson caued; at the City Prison yesterday afternoom. | | She promised the prisoner that she would employ an attorney to look after his in- terests. It was her first visit to the prison since her husband’s arrest, and the detectives say that it was prompted by the statements in yesterday morn- ing’s papers that she might be arrested as an accomplice. The detectives say that none of the wholesale jewlers and others who were victimized by \Sargent will agree to prosecute Mrs. Sargent on theguncorroborated statement of her hus- band. Besides, any action would have to be taken against her in Contra Costa County. | Sargent told Ryan and O'Dea that he was sure there would be a rupture soon between him and his wife, and that was why he was taking some of the stolen jewelry out of the store and hiding it so that when he and his wife separated he would have something to fall back | upon. He told them that his wife knew about his stealings all the time and en- couraged him to go ahead. FORGES CHECK N CITY JAL Joseph A. Smith, who says he is a rafl- road man from Chicago, is accused of forging a check for $% in the city prison and securing his release on a charge of bringing stolen goods into this city on Monday last. He was arrested by Detec- tive Bralg on information that he was ‘wanted in Berkeley for stealing a grip. The bail was fixed at §100 and that day Smith gave Attorney Charles A. Low a check for $%5 on the Germania National Bank bearing the signature “E. O. Cur- tis.” Low went to the bank and cashed the check. He returned to the city prison and put up the $100 for Smith's release. Shortly after Low left the bank a check signed by Curtis was handed in for payment and on comparing the sig- nature with that on the 3% check it was discovered that the latter was not genu- ine.. Curtis and Low were both notified by the bank and Curtis declared that the signature to the $95 check was a forgery. The police were informed and Detective Braig- went in search of Smith, and found him on Wednesday. In his room Braig discovered several sheets of paper On HOUSEHOLD FURNI- TURE, PIANOS, HORSES AND VE- HICLES, SALARY, Etc. Household Loan Co. ?02-3 GALLAGHAN BLIS. .
