OF OLD TIN CANS Worked Over Into Weights for Ele- vators, Window Sashes and Such. I was much surprised and greatly in- terested a few days since when shown through a certain establishment near New York city to find that the “raw material” | used consisted chiefly of empty fruit and vegetable cans ‘rescued by the cart load from the dumps of the eity. I had sup-. posed, up to that timé, that the only pur- poses for which such materfal was suited was food for goats or to be attached to the tails of unfortunate canines. The principal products of this establishment, which is a foundry., are window-sash welghts, clevator weights and ballast for boats. The weight castings are very hard, and when struck with a hammer ring like steel. About the only tool which can ba used for removing sprues and fins is the hammer, as a cold chisel or file will not stand up to the work. The fracture of the round sash weights is smooth, and shows crystals radiating from the center Illke spokes of a wheel. After delivery at the foundry the cans are first piled into a large fron grating lo- cated under a sheet-iron hood which ter- minates in a smokestack. They are sprinkled liberally with crude cil. which is set on fire. This process consumes the labels, loosens the dirt and meits the solder, which falls through the grating, is collected, washed and melted, cast Into ingots and sold to be used again. Some of the cans, which have simply lipped and soldered joints, meit apart completely. These are sorted out and the sheets form- ing the shell are straightened and bound into bundles to be sold to trunk makers who utilize them for protecting the co ners of Saratoga trunks. Thev are also bought by button manufacture who stamp from them the disks used in cloth- covered buttons. The remainder of the eans, being machine made. do nct come apart. These are loaded Into large cart: taken to the charging floor on an eleva- tor and dumped into the cupola. The cupola is fed with coke and cans in alter- nation. There is occasionally an old w; or a bundle of tin roofing m:‘.'..':",’,'.: form the bulk of the material. The cans are so light that some of them are car- ried out at the top of the stacic by the force of the blast. and a large screen ha= been arranged to prevent the pieces from falling on the roof. If among these read- ers of the American Machinist to whom these facts are new there are any who have occasion to use the elevators in the skyscrapers of New York I can tmagine such wondering how many empty ca it took to make thg weights which balanc> the car in which they ride.—American Machinist. —_— The ancient tanner paid an expert high ‘wages to guess at the conten hides when sold by measure. 1":4-“;- hn‘v: something like a table with " top, which, quicker than the mg expert £
