A col@blooded swindler made his ap- pearance at & lodging-house at 711 Mont- gomery &venue last Thursday and suc- ceeded by a plausible tale in inducing the wives of five Italian fishermen to sign pay checks for $2 each on the Pacific | Packing and Navigation Company of Se—l’ attle, which he cashed at the Bank of | California. The women are Mrs. Francisco Mira- | bella, Mrs. Paul Mirabella, Mrs. Camillo | Mirabella, Mrs. Angelo Mirabella and Mrs. Salvatore Sacarko. Their husbands Jeft recently for Seattle to enter the em- | ployment of the Pacific Packing and Nav- igation Company in the Alaskan fisheries. A fellow countryman- called upon them | last Thursday and said be had come from | Scattle at the request of their husbands, | who each desired them to sign a pay | check on the company in his favor for | $2, as he had advanced them the money. | The stranger produced the pay checks | and the women, not believing for a mo- ment that his story was faise, signed them and he at once hurried to the bank and cashed them. George Seecamp, pro- | | prietor of the lodging-house, happened to call at the bank the following day and was informed by the teller of the pay- | ment of the pay checks. He was suspi- | cious and on learning from the five wom- en what the stranger represented he wired to Seattle and received a reply that the man was a swindler. The police were notified by Beecamp and every effort is being made to trace the swindler, as it is suspected that other fishermen’s wives may have been victim- ized by him in the same way. It is sup- posed that he stole the blank pay checks @nd by some means or other obtained a ' list of the men from this city engaged by the company. —_——— WATSONVILLE, May 23.—W. F.
