Major McBride says: “It seems that only the fact that my wife is a lady prevented Redmond and Harrington and their friends from deal ing summarily with her. They evi- dently regret that it was not her hus- band who was present. Unfortunately I cannot go to Ireland at present, but in the meantime, if any of them feel ag- grieved at my wife's action, I shall be most happy to afford them satisfaction in this accommodating country, France.” —_———— Theodore Richmann. He achieved his greatest triumph in New York in “The Flying Dutchman” during the year 1899, and afterward made a tour of the United “IRISH JOAN OF ARC,” HER HUS- BAND, AND TWO LEADERS HE HAS CHALLENGED TO DUEL. Belch of Winnipeg, Manitoba, | @nd a member of the Canadfan Volunteer Contingent in the South African cam- paign, has been found drowned in New Towk Creek in Long Island City. Mrs. Fiske, in whose house Belch lodged for a time, says he often spoke of his father, a Judge in Winnipeg and former- ly editor and proprietor of a newspaper there. He said his mother was an in- valid in California, and that his younger brother was a lumber merchant. Belch said his father was a man of wealth and that his own inheritance would be about $100,000. While returning from South Af- rica, with about $800 back pay, Belch stop- ped in London, and there was robbed. This brings the season’s total rainfall up to 46.86 inches, as against 5147 inches at even date last year. A mnorth wind had been blowing stead- ily for a week and had discouraged farm- ers and orchardists and rain only could save the crops. The ground had been thoroughly baked, the grass was dried up and grain and wheat had grown vellow before it had fairly filled. Last night, however, the north wind gave way to a steady downpour of rain, every drop of which was worth nearly its weight in gold to the farmers and or- In the Churn Creek and Stiil- water districts the crops will be improved 50 per cent and in other localities there will be a general improvement.
