10 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18, 1903. STEAMSHIP ALAMEDA AS OIL BURNER _ EXCELS HER OWN BEST FORMER RECORD COURT-MARTIAL oo tosma s Dot L T RN POPULAR BECAUSE L Than 6 Days---I g d a Cleanli Im- | National Guard Ofticer peossssiblre]dgnder ;::imencffrela(si:i gs:ld \?Vnin ?Dass:ir;e]?s?SSFa\r:;r Is'Tried by His J THEY ARE TH[ BEST Comrades. - el S s SR AL =3 Lieutenant Frank Driscoll ] Is Accused of Bad Conduct. The Sarony Series Stand Unrivaled | Lieutenant Frank Driscoll, Company IL‘ | First Infantry, National Guard of C aif- | _ | | fornia, was on trial before a court-mar-j i tial at the Page street armory last night on charges of unofficerlike conduct, pre- ferred by Captain Thomas F. Costello of | the same organization. The entire ses sion practically was taken up by the ex- amination and cross-examination of the accuser. { | It was asserted that Lieutenant Dris- | | coll had not saluted his company com- | mander on various occasions, that his| | demeanor had been contemptuous and | that he had almost disrupted the organi- | zation. He was placed under arrest by | his superior officer on November 19, 1902, ! and the matter has since been pending. | Colonel Beck of the ¥ Artillery w | president of the court and Major Dorn | | was judge advocate. The accused was | represented by an attorney Captain Costello testified that his subor- dinate had acted in a very disrespeciful | manner on various occasions. The ques | tion of dates proved a troublesome one, however, and made the effect of the pros- | ecution decidedly hazy. When Costeilo was cross-examined there was a contin- | ua! call for rulings on the part of the} judge advocate and of the defense, which | impeded the progress of the case mate- | rially. Almost mo headway was made, and the court was forced to adjourn with | many witnesses still waiting to be exam- ined. | The defense intends to show that Cap- tain Costello was moved to prefer the | charges by personal animus, and that the ia eged unofficerlike conduct occurred for | the most part when both men were in | civilian attire. The accusations are not {of a very serfous nature even from a military standpoint, and in any event the punishment will not probably be severe. E Schr Fortuna, Olsen, 3 days from Eurekai. CLEARED.
