Strong Intimation that the Police Will Now Seek to Put Responsibility for the Crime oo Arthur Pennell, Lawyer|’ Named in Divorce Suit, Who Was Killed in an Automobile. (Special to The Eveaing World.) BUFFALO, N. Y., March 18.—It now seems improbatle that the inquest into the murder of Edwin L. Burdick will ever be resumed. Owing to trowble with the throat of District-Attorney Coatsworth, the inquiry was to-day postponed until next Monday. All the work that has so far been done has gone for naught. The har- assing of Mrs.Hull, mother-in-law of the murdered maz, has thrown no light on the case. The annoyance of Mre. Seth Paine, whose home was watched by detectives, did not help solve the mystery. The illness of the District- Attorney gave an excuse for postponing th. {nquriy. Whether it will be re- sumed is uncertain, HINTS ABOUT PENNELL. Not having had any of their other theories confirmed the police are not unlikely to turn to the testimony of Mr: Parke, Burdick’s partner, as” the solutign of the whole matter: He declared on the ptend yesterdey that he. believed Arthur Pennell, the lawyer friend of Mra. Burilioh, was’ peng! for the crime, either directly or indirectly. It will not be proper for me to discuss this matter until I am able to make a definite announcement. I am going to see Chiet of Detectives Cusack aad the District-Attorney. At the end of our conference I may have an im- portant announcement to make in reference to this case.” CAN STOP THE INQUIRY. ince the abolition of the Coroner's ‘office in Erie County tite Police Justice who conducts an investigation ‘of a murder has the right to stop |‘: rr the investigation at any time he concludes sufficient evidence has been pre- sented to'satisfy him who is the guilty one, It may be that Judge Murphy is convinced that Burdick’s death was the act of Arthur R. Pennell. To so hold and end the inquest would be sure to arouse angry protests from the latter's friends. Pennell's friends are wealthy and politically powerful. It would be political suicide for Judge Murphy to put the crime up to Pénnell, end the Magistrate is a shrewd politician and too good a fellow, his intimates say, to fasten the murder on a dead man who can not defend himself. Meanwhile Supt. Bull refuses to discuss the murder, the inquest or the work of the police. The investigation has practically passed out of his hands into those of Chief of Detectives Cusack. ‘The Buffalo News has a story that the police have received a written threat to kill Burdick from one of the suspected persons.
