12 HE § DA& CALL. ‘M;/demeanor_x" ' . YNANCY~ Condugted by B. G. Lathrop. SERIES of sketches that should e popular for light reading among the fair sex is “The Mis- demeanors of ~Nancy,” by Elean Hoyt. These sketches have been appearing in Everybody's Magazine, and €0 those who have already made the ac- quaintance of the capricious and alto- gether charming Miss Nancy Reynolds will be glad to know that the whole series of her “misdemeanors” is to be had in book form, as recently published by Dou- bleday, Page & Co. of New York. The book is written with that same de- lightful touch that made the *“Dolly Dia- logues” so popular, and placed ““The Let- ters of Elizabeth” among the best sellers of last year. What we may expect from this fascinatingly disreputable young per- son of whom we may hardly approve, but it is easy to adore, is suggested in our in- troduction to her when it is explained by Nancy herself: “SWhen 2 Kentucky belle marries a New Hampshire lawyer there are rocks ahead for coming generations,” she reasoned, having settied herself on the arm of her father's chair and rumpled his gray hair into bopeless untidiness. “Given Kentucky impulses and a New Hampshire conscience, what can one do? You reaily shouldn't expect much of me. “Now, if Deddy had married one of his mslghbors I would be frostily sewing flan- — - + My sympathy is all for myself,” she said. “Of course this fs all very charming,” she 2dded, with a glance that neutralized the chill into which her first remark-had cast Ormsby 2nd ralsed his temperature to fever heat, “‘but —but it really is embarrassing, and—"" she blushed. She looked at Ormsby doubtfully. Then with a little outburst of friendly confidence leaned toward him. ‘“It's worse than embar- ; ‘“it's tragic! My mother had gone out for dinner, and she told both malds they might go and stay until 9 o'clock.” Ormsby arose to the occasion. He believed he had evolved a glittering idea without as- sistance. . Ormeby's guardian angel clutched at his shoulder, but Ormsby shook him off. A sout-inspired torrent of paternal opinion clam- ored in his ears but could not daunt him. T wish——"" he began, then paused to take breath, and went on with a rush: 1 wish you would let me take you to din- nmer. I haven't had mine and I'd have to dine alone. (Shade of the waiting governor!) It's such forlorn work dining alone. I'd be 80 aw- fully pleased if you would go with me." It was out. Ho looked at her apprehensive- ly. The pink gown and hood and the stun- ning fur cloak that had slipped from her, shoulders all seemed appallingly Philistine and conventional. Nancy was surprised. Any ‘one could have seen that. She was also shocked—not so dis- couragingly shocked, however. The shading was masterly. She looked at him with her pretty head e trifle tipped to one side. Evi- “Oh! That you, Dick?’ he said in homeyed tones, carefully lowered. “‘What? Oh, yes, she came down here. Didn't get your telegram. Yes; it was awk- ward, wasn't {t? I understand how you feel. She and I are, Just going out to dinmer. . . - . “Fle, fle, Richard! Such langwidge! So long, old man.’” Hao rang off. ‘A business matter,” he explained to the Vision when he joined her. They started once more. Again the tale- Phone rang viclously. “That,"” sald Ormsby with an aid of convis- tlon, ‘4s the governor.” “‘Aren’t you going back?’ asked Naney. “No; Watkins can attend to it,”” sald Orms- by calmly. He breathed an Inward prayer that the old gentleman might not him of murder by expiring in & fit of Apoplectic rage, and hurried the Vision down to the Sixty-third street cab.—Later, he paid the piper. The goverrfor left no check. Rollins does not speak. But Ormsby swears that the dance was well worth the price. s e i}uthi’ess Rhumesfor Heartless Homes. . H.
