Through the mismanagement of the School Board the teachers will have to go without their June salaries until such time as more money comes in from the taxy s during the next fiscal year. The report of the Finance Committee, of which Sam W chairman, was pre- sented to the board at a meeting on Frl ay evening from which the following is a summa Bills for supplies amounting to $18,%1 40 were before the committee, and the bills for the month of May and June, the last of the present fiscal ear, are yet to come in. Teachers’ May amounted to $84,000 and of shop and office employes $1500, making the total for salaries $%5,500. Consequently, .the d mands against the school fund. were §104, 351 49, in addition to which must be count- ed the June salaries, $85,500, and bills, unestimated. The Salaries Committee reported that the returns from the State Controller ie showed a surplus for the department of | 000, and this, with the $50,000 still in treasury, brought the available funds to $141,000 to meet demands of $I89, and supply bills. The deficit, there h $50,000 by the end of the present fiscal vear, without estimating ills not yet before the board. It was decided to pay May salarles in full, but to hold out all merchants’ bills up S51 4! fore, would rea until after the fiscal year. June salary deman; will be held over until the bills are paid in July. —— e INTERCLUB TENNIS. | Tournaments at the California Club Yesterday Afternoon. The second interclub tennis match of | the serfes was played yesterday afternoon at the California Tennis Club of this city. The match was between the first teams of both clubs. Oakland was represented by the crack double team, Sumner Hardy and Sam Hardy. The colors of the Cali- fornia Club were upheld by Adams and Weihe. Oakland proved too strong a team | for the home players, who-succumbed in three straight sets The first set was won in very easy fash- fon by the Oaklanders. The score, 60, is a complete tale in itself. In the sec- ond set Adams and Weihe picked up con- | siderably, and managed to get four games, when their hopes were suddenly dashed to the ground by.a burst of speed on the part of the Hardys, which won for them the second sét of the match. The third set was .very much like the first, and identical in ‘score. The complete score of the match was 6—0, 6—4, 6—0, The junior ladies’ tournament, which was left unfinished, was completed yes- terday. Miss Eckart beat Miss Parker, (!le runner-up, two out of three sets. | Bach contestant had a set apiece when | time was called for play. The score of | this match was 6—3, 3—6, 6—4. For the past few years the show win- ‘Bows of “Raphaels,” the clothiers, of San Francisco, have been marvels of originality and beauty, but probably no effort of this house in the past has quite equaled the unique and patriotic design now exhibited as a memorial to the unfortunate victims of the Maine disaster. —_————————— Arrested on a Novel Charge.
